Would like Akai to add this to sample edit.

Say you have 16 chops and find a pattern you like lets say its 2,7,9 Id like to be able to drag chop 2 to 1, 7 to 2 , and 9 to 3 then convert to new program ready to play.

Only way I know how to do this now is in a program with a bunch of tedious Pad Copying.
Yall got a mo betta solution?

Can't you just put the order of the slices on the pads you want after you've made a bunch of slices like - pad1=slice2, p2=s7, p3=s9, or can't you just make an new drum program that has the same sample on all the pads & just put pad slice option to Pad (not All or slice) for each pad & slice each pad however you want?

I get what your asking for but its kinda already there but if they did add it how would it even work? - if your in slice mode & only want to use some samples you would still have to select the samples you want which is what you gotta do if you have a program all with the same sample on each of the pads or just the pads you know you want them on & just change the slice # on each pad until to have the order that you like.

Or did I miss your point?

Hi mate!

Whilst I really like the Force conceptually (huge fan of the Live-like Session/clips concept), it's missing a companion VSTi to get consistent sample-accurate sync with the DAW, and overcome the limitations of the hardware (Maschine and MPC shine here), which on anything beyond a single song, is a big deal. There's other shortcomings too where modern MPCs and even old ones with JJOS are superior. (no pleasing people like me huh!) :Sigh:

One of the things the older MPCs had going for them was SMPTE, that's one thing that would be great in lieu of ReWire and Ableton Live if things aren't going to have companion desktop VSTi to work with them as controllers with sample-accurate sync.

In terms of new MPCs, I'll clarify a little for others in terms of what I mean by a lot of breadth but not much depth (ala Maschine). The looper is my favourite example of this on the modern MPC, it should be superior to what can be done in JJOS, but the max 16 bar loop length and workflow is really lacklustre versus Maschine, especially with how it then handles your recorded loops. In the same breath, Maschine can't even record mutes, and there's plenty of other places it falls down versus the modern MPC workflow. Both have pros and cons that are so basic with what I'd expect out of a modern groovebox versus legacy MPCs.

The pinnacle of the groovebox workflow for me is Ableton Live's Session view, that's without even getting into stuff like Push or other controllers, it just worked beautifully via ReWire, and gave sample-accurate sync. Unfortunately, whilst people hope for Ableton Link in all the major linear DAWs, this won't be suitable for me because by its very nature, has jitter/drifting clock, that's how it stays in sync over time, which when working with picture is bad for consistent playback with getting things to land where you expect them. Also doesn't give positional information, nor audio or MIDI. ReWire was in a league of its own for an incredibly niche and specific workflow. I'm honestly a bit lost without it.

Whilst I could "freeze" the system in time using old software, that doesn't let me stay up to date with the latest developments and bug fixes, and with new processor architectures creeping in, that's inevitably going to become more and more of a problem with software updates going forward.

Is modern-day Akai likely to cater to niche use cases like these? Probably not. Even NI with a user base of composers who work to picture didn't care about low-hanging fruit in terms of features that would be a huge boon in terms of workflow efficiency.

Good luck with finding a hardware device that you didn't make yourself that can do everything you want  , but if you do please post it.

So basically rearrange the slices by dragging around on the touchscreen? I can see that working, it would be an alternative and more tactile way of building a kit from chops, good use of the touchscreen IMO as the current methods of, say, manually assigning slice numbers to pads, or using 'convert > assign to pad' are ultimately a bit clunky

mpc_fan_2022 wrote:Their sampling engine doesn't even have a mod matrix and since the MPC doesn't have macros, good luck assigning any parameter of an entire key-group to a control change?

Oh yes please a mod matrix. But not just for samples but for midi as well. Would love to for example route different LFO's into each other and that sum to some internal and external destinations. You can also misuse the mother ducker os some kind of really simple envelope follower but a real one would be great. And there's so much more that comes to mind instantly. Mod matrix and macros are the main reason I am going back and forth between MPC and Ableton Live all the time which is really tedious.

Yeah I was thinking for example: You want Chop 20 to be chop 3 you drag over it drop it it will turn the original 3 to 4 and the original 20 to 3..... Perhaps if you hold down shift when you drop it will overwrite 3 completely.... and 21 will become the new 20
Also it would be cool to delete all the junk chops you don't want while in Sample Edit.

So once you convert to program everything is in order and ready to rock

Thinking about it more... I used to be a CBS News Editor and this is Basically How Davinci Resolve, Premiere, Avid Media Composer work.
You drag a clip over another in the timeline it will either Split the clip and push information behind your new clip or it will Just overwrite it completely depending on if you hold shift or alt.

Any sort of dragging is horrible with the touch screen. Even pointing, selecting, everything. These devices have dozens of buttons and several knobs which are much more precise and less error-prone than the touch screen disaster. If it was possible to use a mouse, it would make a lot of things not just easier, but possible to begin with. (I regret my choice of user name - the touch screen is so bad, it makes me want to use a mouse)

MPC-Tutor wrote:I think it's a fair point that the bulk of Akai's target market these days seems to be producers looking for ready-made presets and instruments, they are unlikely to be that bothered with advanced sampling options for their own uses.

But as someone stated above, people developing sampler instruments would certainly be interested in having those features so in turn they can also develop a range of ready made instruments to add to the options offered by Akai. It's a win-win for Akai as having a huge resource of add-on instruments developed by a community of sound designers brings more desirability to the MPC eco-system without Akai having to lift a finger (beyond ensuring the supporting features are there in the MPC OS in the first place).

Maybe Akai can steal another idea from Roland - in the MC-707 sound engine page there's an easy mode & "advance' mode or w/e its called so this way users can have a choice to what features they want access to.

the mc707 idea is good; I am not against advanced features but I just realise that Inmusic is not targeting sample feature geeks they are targetting hobbyists and youtubers

Until the AKAI MPC standalone runs Massive or Reaktor nothing has been obliterated. Personally I would prefer for AKAI to focus on making MPC a better sampler and sequencer rather than spending engineering resources on 3rd party paid plugins, but that's just me...

3rd party plugins don't require engineering resources.

I meant paid plugins in general, some are developed by AKAI, some aren't. To develop a plugin... you need a developer, a developer developing a plugin is a developer not working on the sampling engine or the sequencer.

True, but a developer developing the sequencer or making a more advanced sampler is a developer not developing plugins.

And without plugins, you get fewer people buying the product because hardly anyone wants to create more complex sampler patches.

The market has spoken. REALITY 1010.

Worth remembering that the plugins themselves are developed by AIR, not Akai, so unlikely to divert any time from development of the MPC, beyond whatever work is required in terms of developing the backed code to handle the plugins in the first place, which I assume is already in place.

Air is owned by InMusic. If you're saying that for instance Fabric is an entirely separate engine from the regular AKAI sample playback engine then the situation is even worse since it's a waste of resources with 2 sample playback engines running on limited hardware...

The MPC's never been Akai's most advance samplers but they did add Auto-Sampling so that's progress...I guess.

What geeky sampling features do you want?

I hope akia ads another vst rompler such as a copy of the jv1080 inside the mpc; fabric is cool but id rather a replica of a tried and tested rompler.

much like how the mini d likely superseeded the tube synth in terms of which onboar synth that people use more
