Meanwhile my 1st gen iPad is 12 years old and in particular on early models amazingly efficient touch interfaces have been developed. SamplR probably the most outstanding app, iElectribe, iMS20, the virtual Fairlight (Peter Vogel), iVCS3, Waldorf Nave, PPG apps.

Yet there never has been (and imho still isn‘t) any DAW app with an ergonomically valid approach... it seems developers don‘t see the forest for the trees, dunno :hmmm:

Touch is not easy to implement and there are dozens of ways to control response and visualize it. Even in IOS land the vast majority of apps simply sucks in GUi design.

Akai went out of their way to Capitalize on Touchscreen Technology...To Make it Easier to Navigate, And These Dudes Said "Its Too Much For Me to pick my Hand up 8 Inches to Touch the Screen"

I guess thats how it is nowadays :Sigh:

Nah, the screen is not in the best place on the X. It's like trying to use the touchscreen for your laptop while it's on a laptop stand between your large ergonomic keyboard/mouse and 32" ultra-wide curved monitor.

Putting your arms that far forward to use a touch-screen is bad posture.

That all being said, the touchscreen functionality is awesome. I can scroll two windows at the same time.[/quote]

:o so I guess that is why people want a hdmi port to have your screen father away.. I get we got to have fun here....

I agree with that statement. Ultimately I don't enjoy using the touch screen at all, AKAI just forces me to use it, and it doesn't even help getting of menu diving...

The touch screen lets you have sliders, knobs, buttons, keyboard, ... without really having any of them. It's all in a makeshift, make-believe way. You can IMAGINE what it would be like if you had actual sliders, knobs and a keyboard. And then there's the MIDI grid editor, which is a practical joke. Ha ha ha.

A touchscreen is nothing but a surface.
How smart/useful a virtual knob or slider becomes depends on it‘s programming.
I don‘t know any real knobs that dynamically change scale while twisting, at least not in the „affordable“ price range.

In touch it‘s easy: hit the icon and a single push may trigger a full twist.
Hit and drag your finger (to adjust scale) change direction of movement and drag with higher resolution.
(distance from hit point defines the divider and can be altered during movement)
The VCS3 Synthi had threaded pots. These multi-turn knobs are perfectly emulated in iVCS3.
A virtual slider with adjustable friction/acceleration is very convenient to use.
These parts don‘t age and allow storage of positions, f.e. go back to previous start point.

On a control surface you may tap to trigger a note and immediately start a modulation by the following gesture. On multi-touch even several.

But this depends on the design skills of developers and programming libs available on the respective system.
I‘m experienced with iPads, but also have a Dell tablet. The latter is simply an annoyance and not even remotely comparable. :Sigh:
So I get your point, but as mentioned: not all of these controls are designed equal

Midi designer pro 2 on iPad is a great thing but most wont take the time to design their OWN cc/nrpn screen/control surface.

Touchscreens are great but so is having dedicated Buttons to directly access parameters,so your not 100% reliant on the screen for things,we are analog animals at heart so a tactile way of working is the natural course for most people, its a generational thing from my experiences,My kids have grown up with touchscreens and so this way of working just seems natural to them, not that i have a hard time using touchscreens on the MPC Keys/X,sometimes a physical button or slider is more immediate and responsive

I find that it takes a lot of mentally recalling with touchscreens where things are because more data can be accessed on them rather than muscle memory from pressing a single button and when I compare this to accessing the same sort of options on my Older MPC4000,having a "Window" button to access those hidden options is something i wish the newer MPCs had which will open whatever parameter the cursor is on without having to actually leave the Main screen, with the MPC keys I have to select ehe menu button and then access which ever page I need for editing, from a veteran MPC user,I don't find that the newer mpcs make the workflow process faster they just present things in a more visually pleasing manner, which is great.
the newer MPCs are kind of like painting the house through the letterbox to do a simple operation sometimes the things that are grouped together on the 4K are scattered over different menu options in the X/Keys 61

Over the years I have removed a lot of the Synths I had which were reliant on Touchscreens its not the way i like to work but again its personal preference.

Music making is not a one size fits all with an MPC,but again I like the way they have evolved over the years and adding a Touchscreen was always going to be the next step but at the same time I have kept my older 4K simply because I know it without having to think too much where things are and my workflow is always that bit faster when i use it than it is when using the MPC key

The way the touchscreen works on the V-synth is perfect as it speeds up the workflow while leaving you with the option to use the excellent physical UI for everything that isn't faster done with the touchscreen. Yes it's old and thus leaves out certain modern touchscreen functions, but for musical workflow purposes it's pretty ideal in the way its integrated and interacts with the rest of the UI.

As I bought it only a short while before the MPC Live was released I didn't get to use the MPC4000 enough to develop much muscle memory but I can easily imagine a fast workflow being possible. What I miss the most from the 4000 is that it actually had a proper mod matrix. So whenever I wondered if this or that could be done then the answer was usually Yes. While the Live provides some nice things the 4000 didn't have, whenever I reach for something that's been a standard feature in sample based gear for decades, quite often it's simply not there. Apparently this is supposed to make me creative. Haven't worked so far so I guess my abilities have to be below some talent threshold needed in order for this phenomenon to occur.

I think they did a great job translating from the mpc ren to the mpc touch era; I went from mpc studio to mpc live; and I dont notice any major difference in speed of use; and the trade off for convenince is worth it to have the touch screen layout.

there will always be those who treasure the old units but the feature set we have now; I dont see how u guys can go back to your older units.

What I was replying to was the post saying the LCD was in the way and was referring to the hdmi port for a monitor to replace the screen which I don't agree with.. I own the X and have not issues but some bugs but if most came from our legacy days this is just okay save first and move on..
