should have done my homework on modern S/PDIF In the early 2k years it was definitely trouble with most audio interfaces to have simultaneous io on that port, so I simply switched to Adat and ignored S/PDIF.
@monotremata my bad (choice of expression). Adat comes with a chipset (licensed from Alesis) that handles sync and transfer and presents a single layer to the software.
S/PDIF is of course a standard, but originally left all implementation to the respective manufacturer, so on early devices bidirectional mode was frequently left out.
Today there are likely support/driver chipsets (I didn‘t look up) and things moved on.
