not that hard, but pretty close :WTF: should have done my homework on modern S/PDIF
In the early 2k years it was definitely trouble with most audio interfaces to have simultaneous io on that port, so I simply switched to Adat and ignored S/PDIF.

@monotremata my bad (choice of expression). Adat comes with a chipset (licensed from Alesis) that handles sync and transfer and presents a single layer to the software.
S/PDIF is of course a standard, but originally left all implementation to the respective manufacturer, so on early devices bidirectional mode was frequently left out.
Today there are likely support/driver chipsets (I didn‘t look up) and things moved on.
Sorry for the mess

I go back at he end of June, so I'll just have to sit tight for now.

Thanks everyone for your input.

In researching this, I did wonder about user using external reverbs, being so few people are keen on the internal. Not via SPDIF, but now external interfaces have given us multi ins and outs. Even pedals like the hall of fame may hold up as a an improvement.

And I'd totally dig Valhalla providing a paid for option.

yeah, i very often use one individual out of the mpc live as out for a return track, so i can open a send on whatever channel and route it to the external mixer, which in turn routes it to a strymon big sky.

Ahh cool if you're not going back until then, I can try it out this weekend and make sure it all works.
I used to do this all the time in Logic Pro, but that was with my MOTU interfaces. The Behringer is pretty much the same operation as the 828's but you never know if they cut any corners (the UMC1820 was like $250 brand new including shipping for me haha). I gotta dig out my S/PDIF cables, but I can hook up the 1820 to the 500 and try it out Friday/Saturday.
