I don't know if making single-instrument sound samples has ever been a big thing with MPC's though. Is it like, with S1000 etc standalone samplers, people made instruments, but with MPCs, it was more like sampling beats and big sounds from records?
The MPC wasn't meant for advanced sampling at first & not up until the 4000 & kinda with the current models. Akai use to have those advanced samplers but now their trying to put it all in the MPC/Force. Which is why old MPC heads & newer MPC owners especially those coming for the software world be at odds about what the best direction for the MPC to go. Old heads tend to want to keep it simple & are usually the the ones hating on the touch screen
people that had those advanced Akai samplers or the software crowd want more non typical MPC features. I hope that kinda sums it up.
Exactly. the keygroup program still lacks some refinement to be on par with a classic full blown sampler, but is good enough to create great instruments, plus the auto sampling feature is the holy grail. i'm slowly building a huge library of sounds auto-sampling patches i make on the eurorack synth, it's so good that i can play polyphonically patches that are monophonic!
when i want something more characterful i first create a multisample program on the s950 making use of the filter and its envelope, then autosample it in the mpc. it is a tedious but rewarding process.
