MPC nostalgia is powerful! If you can't make these new units bang you need to become a painter or whatever.

Anyway, Armen always got like 5 of every MPC in his shop. That's 1 good thing about living in NYC, easy access to a lot of used gold. Even NYC Craigslist be popping, especially for photography equipment. I got my first MPC from either Armens of Rogue Music back in 2005 when I use to hustle. Good times!

The pictures of his back stockroom are **** sick! Wall to wall MPCs, 1200s, ASRs, etc. I cant believe what he charges for some shit even today, but people STILL buy it!

The pictures are 1 thing. Being in the actual store is a whole other thing. I just wonder If he has someone to take over when he retires.

I also thought, what if this dude made beats?

they do bang, they just don't bang out of the box as some earlier models. as told in my previous post, i think current mpc's are more than fine to do both production and live performing. in some regards they are of course the most powerful mpc's (perhaps the most powerful hardware "grooveboxes-sampler\sequencer\tactile control") ever. in other regards they are inferior to older models (of course mpc 4000 with its z8 sampler under the hood, extensive mod matrix and 96k 24bit engine). the "out of the box" bang factor can be non-relevant to some, can be absolutely important to others. embrace biodiversity :D

what i'd like to see here is a bit more openness to other people's perspective, a bit less supponence, people here often suppose the "other" talking is just an hype-mesmerized nostalgic idiot with no actual knowledge and experience. i'd like to remind you that some of us are born and raised before the rise of social media\youtube\influencers, damn , even before the cell phone :) i for one have always been fascinated by new technology and most of all new intriguing sound techniques, but learnt in my journey that a lot of old tech was built better because of a ton of reasons, mostly economic but also social and linked to shifts in perception and blah blah blah...too long to discuss here

anyway i think you are totally wrong re: high frequency. if you have the bad habit of filtering out very high frequencies you just kill what's called the "air" of a signal, its higher harmonics, which are barely audible but contribute to the sparkling quality of a good full range sound.
of course nowadays people are used to listen to music with very shitty sound systems... but that's a problem, not a feature :)

You are right about the names haha oops. I am not sure there is a "right" or "wrong" when it comes to me filtering or eqing my mixes the way I want to hear them. If i dont like hearing the sounds above 16khz i will knock em off if i wanna lol. it's my art!

I understand that if you limit the freq before the end of the subsonic spectrum you lose the air. That's the point. Despite you not liking it that's where tape bottom and topped out so if you recorded your super high def 24bit 96k full nyquist master copy to tape you'd end up filtering it in the process. I was merely describing how to emulate a shitty sound that is more familiar to analog era folks. MP3 runs out at 18kHz so all that extra dynamic range up to 22kHz is gone widdat as well.

I wasnt describing how to create a ballanced mix.

ah ok, sorry i misunderstood the part where you said that everything over 8khz is negligible.
yah, i get it, you are talking about the natural, ear-pleasing high end roll off occurring with tape.

Well, I never owned any of the earlier MPCs. But let me say this, when I got my MPC One (no it's not for sale) I was immediately impressed with the audio quality. It sounded cleaner than my computer even though that can all be in my head but maybe not

yes! i think the quality of the built in audio interface is quite good! even if pushed a little into the red zone, it retains clarity.

no worries hyena hah. i aim a bit low because i'm under a likely erroneous delusion that if i target the lesser media boundaries it should sound ok across most systems / renders if i master it on a flat response set of monitors. I dont really know if it's a working plan though, i'm just winging it like the rest of my life....

I want mine super clean.
400dB of dynamic range.
1Mhz sampling rate.
256bit internal audio processing.

Just like you said , now you get best of both worlds , before you only had the "gritty and warm sound" now you can have it clean .. and also get it as Lo-fi as you want to

Videogame wise, I feel like this...Felt like the games were much harder back then, especially without autosave and hints.

Games were harder! Try playing the original Mario kart or F-Zero! Compare them to today's namby pambyness, they're rock hard!

Not read all of this post so sorry if this has been mentioned, but you do know of the fx you can add to simulate those old mpc's? Maybe they're download able add ons from the official download section in the user area? Not sure as the live 2 is my first mpc. And tbh, it kills the Mc707 that I have also.

... just to balance things out ...

Majority of those who have both the new and the old MPC have some imaginary nostalgia of them sounding less dynamic ...

:WTF:

Good luck with the sane cheerleading

I'm trying to make sense of what you mean.
Are you saying that owners of both say that the older MPCs sound less dynamic?

So far, that's not what the majority is saying that. So, shouldn't you have written they remember them sounding "more" dynamic, instead of less?
By sl23 Tue Jul 25, 2023 7:32 am
I think he meant that they sound better because they are less dynamic. As in, less dynamic range. It's like the old cassette and vinyl vs CD thing years ago. CD's are invariably better quality, but some argue cassettes and vinyl sound better because there's less dynamic range. They sound warmer, less clinical.

whatever, i have both mpc live mk1 and mpc 1000 in front of me right now, all wired up to the same mixer , same channel type (allen heath gs3), flat eq. as said, the live sounds really good, but when you hit the 1000 there's no competition, the sound is fuller, harder, more present. it's like when i compare recordings i made with the sound card on a daw (motu ultralite 24bit 96khz) to the ones i make on the fostex r8 (which is very far from being an high end multitrack tape machine...8 tracks on a 1/4" tape...), the analog tape wins hands down, no competition. it really depends on what you want and need. i personally need that my main drums hit the hardest they can, this is also linked to the genres i play\produce. each of us has its own needs and proclivities. fair enough!
