I sometimes edit a samples start and end times in program edit, then flatten the pad to create a new sample. I do this to isolate a hit from a loop. I know this can/should be done in sample edit mode, but in the past I've found the flatten pad method quicker.. yesterday I went to do this and the resulting flattened pad sounded brighter and slightly distorted from the original. Even though I had no FX assigned to the pad. Shouldn't the flattened pad always sound exactly like the original, as long as there are no FX on it? What could be coloring the sample, and why do I only hear it AFTER I flatten the pad? :?:

It’s not just effects, check envelopes and layers also.

Your doubling something somewhere I think.

Something is now permanent with the sample AND in your machine and is doubling I am guessing.

Thanks Lampdog, it was the filter. I had lowpass #8 selected which was brightening the sound substantialy, even though cutoff was set to 127.. I had assumed lp filter opened all the way had no effect on the sound. Lp #8 adds some grit even at 127 which as you stated was getting doubled after flattening.

MPC-Tutor wrote:Interesting, so you have lowpass 8pole as your default filter in 'Preferences > Project Defaults'? Definitely set that to 'None'. I've seen people have problems with low pass 127 cutoff before, also in legacy MPCs. Yes in theory it shouldn't impact the sound, but I suspect it does to a small degree.

Yes, I was always changing filter type to Lp 8, so I set it as default. The whole things got me thinking of ways to abuse resampling with subtle FX taken to extreme by re-applying them.. for example: subtle compression flattened 5x. How would this compare to one application of heavy compression? Or flanger resampled over and over.
I remember seeing an experiment with natural room ambience where the source sound was played on a mic'd speaker, then re-recorded with the rooms ambience again and again, essentially magnifying the rooms reverb. After 10 or so recordings the original triggering sound was unrecognizable.
Next time I get a moment with my MPC, I'll have to give it a try.

I’ve had that doubling happen to me before and that’s what it sounded like when you describe the problem. There are so many places where accidental things can be printed, sometimes even mpc vets will forget.

This interest me, I am looking for answers on why when in sample edit, trim tab plays the sample louder and brighter than program tab. In the program tab , under the envelope effects, it is default to low 1 and I have never touch this , it's how my mpc came , new, default set to low 1 , on the effects tab of the envelope page.

The coloring starts with the Low 4 Filter. I think these from 4-6 add some extra high-end to give the Cutoff/Resonance some extra juice to play with. I wish 1 of them YouTube dudes would do a deep dive demo on the filters...

Trim tab is playing the RAW PHYSICAL SAMPLE. No internal routing, nothing.

Program tab is internal and has routing going on.

Meaning that the trim tab plays the sample at the vol determined by the physical global vol knob on the device. Which bypasses the any internal vol changes from the drum program. TubeDigga broke it down visually in those videos I posted. It can difficult to understand this stuff at first from plain text.
