it is EXACTLY as you said, just run VNC server on it to find out.
Desktop software is designed with mouse controls in mind and you are able to operate it entirely without looking at the mpc , in the standalone mode however, even with native mouse support which only "emulates" touch controls, sooner or later you will have to focus your eyes on the controller and as soon as you do it, you will have to THINK to focus on the external sceen again. It's not natural whatsoever, it's not same as let's say computer keyboard where you can type without even looking at it - touch controls requires you to refocus on the controller wheter you like it or not. Been there, done that and let's face it, in my opinion it it's a shit workflow full of cons, no matter what pros you throw at it
