“Doesnt anyone else notice this!? I feel like im taking crazy pills!!!!”

Whats going on?

Has anyone else here experienced the mpc ren/studio when mpc software first cohesively dropped?

When you chop samples on any mpc theres pops or clicks for a milisecond or two at the beginning of each chop in a sample. You can of course negate that like most of us had by adjusting the attack of EACH CHOP (beyond annoying to have to do this for years now) and the pop or click will be gone.

BUT

There was a dream that was once rome. I mean there was a time when these pops or clicks werent even a thing. I still have an mpc ren attached to an old imac running mpc software 1.4 roughly. No pops or clicks.

I see ALL these videos of mpc influencers etc showcasing the mpc sample and lone behold u can hear the pops at the beginning of the chops.

Does nobody else notice this? It drives me crazy

So here i am contemplating the mpc sample when now i have to think about how to get to program edit to adjust the attack of the sample to negate the glitch of the pop or click at the beginning of each chop.

Call me crazy all you want but maybe i hear things too well or am a perfectionist but this drives me absolutely crazy.

Whats interesting is I was just talking with my friend who got a Sample today and he said the ADSR is terrible specifically the attack. He said the curve of the attack is hella steep and nothing like his other mpcs. Pretty common practice to adjust the attack when chopping samples to remove the initial transients or to create that ducking effect. He said he cant do that with the curve of the attack on the sample

Anyways, not really what you're talking about but thought but thought I share

Can you link some videos where the issue is audible? Genuinely curious.

Setting the Attack to around 3 or 5 in Sample Edit can eliminate the pop noise when using Chop mode. BTW, MPC OS automatically adds a 1.1 ms Attack when converting chops to a drum program.

Yep, I noticed the attack isn’t automatically “softened” like XL.
At the very start I realized it and have been doing the same thing ELIJAH just stated and everything is fine.

@ Jo beats - totally in line with what im talking about dude. the attack being hella steep vs the other mpcs would be brutal if its not the same curve.. yikes

@ instrumental - man not to sound like a goof but its in literally every video of someone chopping samples on it, i guess you just might be used to it or dont notice it possibly, but put on headphones, watch marlodiggs or any of these influencer producers showcasing the chops and keep your ear out and open for it youll hear it

@elijah, totally dude, i mean ive been doing that for years to a degree, im still on mpc 2 software but i usually find 13 or so on the attack of each chop gets rid of the pop, regardless i just wish it wasnt a thing i had to always do, because as i was saying there used to not be this problem to begin with in older mpc software.. it just happened during some update around late 1.8 or so and never left. everyone just got used to it i guess/didnt notice it or adjusted to just upping the attack a bit on sample chops

@lamp - word. i didnt know the XL softened attack like that ive never tried the XL..interesting, and yeah same, everything is 'fine' but its a time consuming workaround that i dont understand why it started occuring in the first place. i guess im asking for too much lol it wasnt always there is all im saying. such is life, but glad i wasnt the only one hearing that, respects.

i guess ill skip the sample for now, ive tried to put myself in the shoes of making things on it but see myself more so using it as an sp to play a beat set off and incorporating some flexbeat or onboard fx etc, i dont see how itd let me do the technical chopping i need to do to make myself happy lol. i like making chops out of things that arent necessarily easy chops sometimes and this just seems like a headache to use. i digress

If I remember correctly OG X did it too (been a while since I sold it).
On the bigger machines you could alter the entire program/track and make that happen
at once. IDK if MPC Sample can do that or not, I’ll find out soon though.

I haven't seen a multipad edit listed anywhere, but another good feature... Ala the SP404 mk2's option to bulk edit banks or mute groups...

Yo, I took a quick listen and I definitely hear it. Now I'm wondering if all of these influencers are deaf. Not deaf as in fresh, but deaf as in "I literally can't f*cking hear anything." Ironically enough, it's most noticeable in the videos where they talk about the filtering options.

@ instrumental LMAO

trust me bro. sorry if i pointed it out to you, you mightve gone your whole life without noticing lowkey  . its one of those things where i hear it and can never not hear it, sht i even hear it in their videos when theyre playing synth bass or drums over it!

and yea a lot of them are deaf to ish like that i feel like. its not a big deal to some people at all, but i cant finish a beat without making sure those clicks or pops are all gone, sometimes i export a beat and realize one chop in like pad bank D will have it and i forgot to adjust the attack and i have to go back in and fix it when i KNOW no one else is even gna hear it LOL

The pops are certainly annoying... I kind of get Akai not going all Ableton Live and putting a quick fade in/out to *some* extent... sure that 1ms or so *can* be punchier... but for a "baby's first sampler" device... it doesn't really have any training wheels to help the new folks out. As a stereo forward device... sampling stereo content is *of course* going to have more pops since 0 cross is harder...

What I suspect though is... the newer folks don't know and will happily make decidedly worse content with it... and not understand why they are clipping all over the place...

while folks who do know will take the time to adjust start/end points and chop markers... just add a touch of attack/decay... or otherwise go resample to deal with the issue.

Akai does have some time to tweak/adjust the firmware though... and we'll see which users they want to cater to over time.

Would be great to have a solution for that! Like in Live indeed, or the m8, unlike Polynésie Tracker…
It’s always a trade of between transitent and pop, but diable, as others did it and it works great… it’s a decision and effort the developper can make or not, we’ll see.

This is exactly me. Maybe it’s one of the reasons why I don’t sweat some things many others might.

Yeah man... it doesn't really bother me much... but as we've seen the MPC Firmware 3.x get more bedroom producer friendly (which is fine)... it does kind feel a weird choice... that's all :D

Nah, definitely aware of zero-crossing, etc. I just wasn't following the MPC Sample hype and thought maybe there was a fighting chance they would collectively have their ish together. Sorry I doubted you! Now I'm *GOING* to be looking for this in the future in order to determine which channels I should be avoiding.
