If I was the copyright holder of the material, I’d want a lot more money once a song using it blew up especially if I hadn’t been approached previously. How much skin in the game you have definitely bears on negotiations.

Don’t overthink it. If they ever came after you it’s because your music was HUGE! It would literally be the least of your concerns at that point.

Your focus should be on making great music and not worrying about copyrights of sounds from a plugin

JethroJethro wrote:Okay stupid question time:

Let’s say I download a demo of a plug-in and sample some sounds to make key groups or my own pads, my demo expires and I later go on to publish a song using the sounds I sampled. Do I have the rights to do this?

Unless you publish that info, how would they even know you used their plugin especially after you edited, layered with other sounds & ran thru FX?

Easily recognizable loops would be more of a concern. Also, how often do this same situation happens? Is any of the music you make potentially putting you in this situation? If so I would love to hear it.

Edited: missing words.

Yeah, I’m not stealing sounds to make music sorry. And I think some of you are way off on how little beats are being sold for. Regardless, I’m not a beats guy I have zero interest in creating backing tracks for others to use although I get that’s what a lot of MPC people aspire to.

Food for thought, songs that were made but couldn’t be released because they couldn’t clear the samples: https://djbooth.net/features/2016-05-26 ... m-samples/

That link is about sampling songs. You're talking about using a plugin synth while on a after the demo is over. I even said recognizable loops would be more risky.

Can you answer my questions?

I suppose my answer to those questions is i wouldn’t have used a sound or sample I didn’t have the right to use in the first place. The likelihood of getting caught has nothing to do with that choice.

How would they know? I’m sure software and scanning will only get more powerful over time. Would spitfire actively search for their sounds in songs to make sure everyone who published did so from a licensed plugin? If it was cheap and easy enough, maybe. They already have DRM so people can’t use the plug-in for free this isn’t much of a stretch. Interesting this community looks to protect their own, but cares not for the people and companies who make the plug-ins. Those dudes have bills just like the rest of us.

Anyways, my decisions of what and what not do in life are based on more than “will I get in trouble for this?”

Just a hypothetical question about a scenario that wouldn’t ever affect me. Spent far more time replying to comments here on the issue than it took to ask a simple question in passing.

I gotta assume a large portion of this community is hip hop focused or at least started there. Part of hip hops foundation and origin story comes from what you call “stealing” or whatever. Your morality stance is honorable but you’re missing the point

Good artists borrow , Great artist steal

I guess I am missing the point. Oddly the community is not a fan of AI which does the same thing: takes original musical content without paying the creator to create new content to monetize.

And the whole “it won’t matter because you’ve hit it big” argument is spurious when a lot of producers sell beats pretty damn cheap.
