Compression has 3 diff usages.
imma explain this first. Compression mainly uses a threshold, like a line, that when the sound hits that line volume wise, it starts to work. Now the ratio is how much compression starts working when it goes past the threshold. Attack is how quick it starts to work, and release is how long it holds for.
now the 3 applications of compression break down like this.
the first usage is while recording. Say u are recording a singer and once and a while she will sing to loud. Compression puts this shelf there and when she hits it, it will tame it. same thing for insturments and drums.
the second use is in the mix. Say u have a guitar that is too low in the mix, and the rest of the instruments are just right, but u cant raise the volume of the guitar becasue it will be too loud. So u put the threshold there so u can effectivly raise the lower part of the sound without worrying bout the upper shelf clipping. It puts a cieling on it so u can rasie the volume without the louder parts of the sound clippin cause they are kept at bay.
Now the 3rd part of compression is the mastering stage. U use this to raise the whole volume of the track without clipping it. So it appears more full and loud. By putting a threhold there its like a wall that when **** goes past it it gets squashed. So u can effectivly make it louder without blowing out speakers or whatnot.
and that is compression 101. Instead of grilling cats about it, inform them scott. Casue dude apparently doesnt know what it does and is. But now he does.
Compression is a tool though. Use it when needed. Alot of times cats squash the dynmaics out of samples/songs/drums due to compression. U have to know when to use it. I honestly never use it.
