The SP-12 is a 12bit sampler, just as the 1200, no 8-bit deh...
What lead you astray Tombstone is that 8-bit processor the Z80A...

The sp1200 sample rate is like 22.1k or something like that, from what I read, and the mpc60 is like 30.5k.... so the mpc will sound better without aliasing, and still sound low fi at the same time. Plus the sequencer is way better. Plus it has double the sample time. There is absoloutely no way in hell to upgrade the sp1200's sample time. So you decide now...

60's sample rate is 40KHz fixed, that's why it can sound clean.

Its weird cause the 1200 costs alot more than the 60, upwards to twice as much. The 1200 is dope as we all know, but lets be honest , if you had to chose the 60 or 1200, we all wouldn't even hesitate to pick our 60. I think people jack up the price on the 12 and 1200 cause of its name and reputation while the 60 seems to float under the radar, behind the 2000, 3000, 1000 etc. Better get your 60 now before people start to put 2 and 2 together.

That's true, the SP is just as loved if not more than the 60, but people know that, and charge accordingly.

I could see some people picking an SP over a 60, but us? c'mon, we already picked.

60 are pretty much at the same price as when I got mine almost 4 years ago, it's just that there are more upgraded ones now, and more people know about the upgrade, so you see more transactions, but that only helps to rescue some 60's from being junked cuz people know people want them.

Hey Andreas,
wanna know what the price is all about?
It's because you can't go out and buy a SP-1300xl or the new USB capable SP-800.
People know that records are being made on all the MPC's so the thought is, one is just as good as the next or that the newer MPC's have more features for the price.
Could be worst when AKAI first stopped making Pro gear it was funny.
The entry level sampler was the S-950, in the next line the entry level was either the S01 or step up to the S-2000.
Don't really know what to expect from Akai right now since the 3 current MPC's all seem to be selling pretty good.

I'm that rare individual who would take a SP-1200 (or ASR-10) over the 60 any day.
It's funny I have been using SP's since the late 80's, the MPC's almost as long and dumped my (original purchased new S-950 ) as soon as the ASR-10 came out, but I always hated the EPS'.
So it's far from a I know one better than the other it's just what I like.
I am not talking about getting rid of any of them because they all work together to get the big picture accomplished.
It's just so ridiculous the sh*t you can do when you seq part of the drums on the 1200 and part on the 60 and have them locked up nice and tight.

The thing about the 60 drums would be that they sound big and hit you in the chest, but the SP drums kick you in the chest.
When I was a young teen (no license just sitting around the house making beats for the high school dances) my moms use to always complain about how the drums felt in her chest.
Hey she liked to look at the lights and meters dancing around.

Saddest thing about the 60's is that unless places like Forat and VST start offering rebuild options the next couple of years are going to get ugly for the older heavily used units.

D*mn all this typing, did I ever really say anything?

Actually, the SP will have a harder time with parts due to the SSM chips used in the filters, the 60 parts are pretty standard AFAIK, but it is good reason to care for your gear.

By ntalec Sun Apr 17, 2005 5:17 pm
El, they are not hard to get, In fact one of the distributor sells them on eBay quite often. You can contact him and get them without going through the auction.
They are prompt shippers too.
A lot of the parts in the older gear are readily available in Hong Kong you just have to order them.

The problem comes in with repair shops not wanting to get the parts or trying to hit the clouds with the price.
The only thing is I hate seeing all these 60's that have been neglected.
Seriously why should a piece of gear have rust spots and pits??
It would be different if it was the type of gear that no one wanted or needed anymore but it's far from that.

One thing that get's me, is why doesn't Forat offer a lower price to paint job that puts your MPC back to original white with graphics?
We need that more than the crazy graphics.

By elmacaco Sun Apr 17, 2005 5:50 pm
yeah, if I had to repaint one I'd do the original paint job.

Those SSM chips were used in many machines, and are somewhat in demand and no longer made, so now it may not be a problem, but in the future it may be harder. They don't fail often though, which is nice.

Yeah, there are a lot of beat up 60's, I guess they fell out of favor at somepoint due to the 2000 and computer sequencing, then beligerant assholes trashed them cuz they were cheap.

I hate when people scratch up their 60 or put BS on them like marker or stickers. Well, I have two stickers on my 60, but they are on the endcheaks so I don't f up the paint. but still, it's dumb!

By Toecutter Sun Apr 17, 2005 6:01 pm
my bad.... 30k, 40k, teh point is its higher than 22 but I stand corrected. Those specs on the 60 were way ahead of their time for 1988...

By elmacaco Sun Apr 17, 2005 7:01 pm
not to jump on you too bad, but the SP-12 has a sampling rate of 27.5KHz, and the 12 has 26.04KHz.

Sorry

thee was a time in the 90's where for a couple of years I f*cked with the ap 12, thats it. I was infactuated with the sp 1200 cause I was in love with that T.R.O.Y song by Pete Rock(still am). THE 60 is what I use now, but the 1200 is dope, its hiphop. So, the 60 isnt better, its just what I use now. The 1200 is dope, I think we all agree.
that alias ring tone is possible in the sp12, sp1200, casio FZ1, Emu Emax, and zoom sampletrak.
Also possible with the Ensoniq Mirage which has user configurable Nyquest based input filtering.
