Pete Rock is STILL making Hot Beats, Period!!! I doubt if anybody on this board can make beat as good :? :? The New Pete Instrumental CD is All
dat, a little up thin in overall sound, that could've been corrected during
mixdown with right techinques. about that Pete and Cl 12' Pete only did one
side. What gotta remember is Pete and CL never were really underground ,"underdogs" but not underground. The made Radio records (I got the love & I'll take you there) I even read Articles from back in the day where they
had wanted to hook up with Snoop and Dre. Plus, MOST artist want to keep up with times and Still retain the style and NO ONE as done this as well as Pete Rock not even Premier. If you play a Sp 12 beat for an MC today, he'd be pasted over for more crisp and polish Production. It not to the SP 1200's Studio 440's s950's and Emax's aren't useful, Producers are finding
new ways to these aging Pieces of gear. Plus Finding Upgrades and replace
-ment parts is getting harder and harder! Bottom line:There is no such thing as a 12 bit sell out! I find that the same type attitudes that you find with so called "backpack kids" most of are suburban types who secretly listening to hip hop in 90's thinks they can call the shots cuz the Street dudes who "Don't Care about hip hop" Have took over! :!:

Heres an analogy for you:

Was Roy Ayers more raw in 1971 (he's coming LP), or 1979 when he brought the disco "heat" via 45.

Same shit different era..

Btw. The "street heads" don't even check for Pete Rock. His fan base has always been "backpackers", "suburban kids", and "true hip-hopers, breakers, writers". I don't think I knew one person in 1993 bumping Pete. Especially back home in SE San Diego. Dre, Ren, Yella, Mac 10, Cube, Easy, Bone, Brother Lynch, etc., were on hit back then. And if heads in the West were even checking for east coast Hip-Hop, it was that timbs n' hoodie shit like Oynx, Wu (who basically converted the West to show love for E. Coast Hip-Hop), Black Moon, Keith Murray, EPMD.

Even the cats I use to chill with that had moved from D.C., or L.I., to CA back then, didn't listen to Pete. I use to run with "street heads" as you put it, and they were checking for Mobb Deep, Nas, Lord Finesse, Diamond..

I have always been into Pete, even back in 93.
I'm from Los Angeles, I knew about him and what a great
producer he was AND still is.

That May be in Cali But , Philly The was bumpin T.R.O.Y Crazy on the Radio!! Pete Rock ,Brand Nubians ALWAYS got luv! The DITC, Diamond Show & AG Got the Utmost Respect!!! Some groups like Mobb Deep and Wu Raised me, and sold more Lp's Philly than in NY in some cases!!

So on the East the above mention artist were what we listened to in the hood. The only West Coast we bothered with was Cuber Snoop and Dre and Pac, maybe Scarface! All them dudes you named was wack to us!!

Keep in mind Pete Hasn't Landed any tracks on major Label LP's in YEARS !!! (unlike Premo, who Blessed Nas, Biggie, Jigga and a lot of other street MC's) Pete Must not have the business skills to land Tracks on big named
Artist Lp's. Plus he got into it with Nas and when Producers get in beef with
big named Artist IT RUINS THERE CAREERS!! In fact ,CL don't even mess
with Pete More, and having a Ten year absence from the Music industry without any hits or major label activity is a Death sentence.

What streets you from??????

I also can't help but laugh at the way you put suburban kids and "true hiphoppers" in the same phrase. Its almost like you're trying to say only backpacking nerds form the burbs are true hiphoppers.

GUYS....I'm letting this one go. Its so ridiculous that its not worth arguing about.

one last thing......I said it before and I'll say it again. Peep production on PR's Queen and the beats he did on the Ed OG album. Then try telling me he fell off.

I can respect what your saying.

I think Pete didn't do the major label thing because he was unwilling to compromise his sound. He wanted to rock the SP-1200, and do the chill out jeep beat sound he's known for. After 15 years of bucking the system, he caved in, coped a 2000, did a few modern style singles, and here we are talking about him falling off. It's that simple.

By elmacaco Fri May 20, 2005 4:15 pm
What? Aw Naw, 15 years of SP-1200? Yo he copped the 2000 way before he was slippin a little, but Jaem is right about one thing, he did bring it for that Ed OG. Crazy.

Also, Philly, you can make polished tracks on 12 bit gear, Primo used the 60 and 950 with all the artists you mentioned and you won't notice anyone complaining. Also, finding parts isn't that hard for these peices because they have a big following to this day. Many artists outside hip hop still use these machines.

See, it tends to be cats who don't have 12 bit gear that think there is one 12 bit 'sound' it has many sounds, it reacts to your levels, it reacts differently to post processing, to different sample material, to the envelope circuitry in the machines, it smacks real hard but you can tame it with a slight attack envelope, there is a wide variety of sounds available, you can bring the sound that people recognise as 12 bit out more or keep it reserved, and it's real easy to do either, no plug ins needed.

Are you Smoking??? Pete Rock got bills like me & you too, fam, just his sound (wasn't and s till is not) what you dude were checking for. Swizz Beats came in with something totally Different, and the game changed! Notice Premo STILL uses 12 bit samplers and was landing Track on Jay Z Albums for a Minute!! In fact he surrposed to do a Whole Album with Nas ,Although for some reson I don't think it going to pan out!

Bucking the system??????

are you serious?????????

If I remeber correctly on SS1

there were many references to material possesions

and PR damn near invented the R&B remix over a hiphop beat. You call that style bucking the system. PR did the beat for JUICY (he claims puff saw him with the record looped up in his basement and redid it with no credit to PR)

Pete didn't do the major label thing because he was unwilling to compromise his sound

I just don't get alot of you ppl.????

You really think producers are willing to turn down paying gigs????

Pete Rock is STILL making Hot Beats, Period!!!

THANK YOU PS....at least there is one other cat on this board who knows what time it is

Philly:

I understand what your saying.. Belive me. I could pick apart your reply, go into way greater detail about my stance then I need to, and in the end, your still gonna see it your way, and Im'a see it my way. So im'a end my replies to this thread, and the other.

Jaem:

Same goes to you. Heres a quick reply though.

Bucking the system has nothing to do with collecting material possessions. It has to do with dumbing down your sound to reacher a broader audience, in order to pick up album sales.

Juicy came out in 95/96. Good era of Hip-Hop. Real shit was still catching the occasional TV appearance.

Nothing wrong with mid 90's R&B/Hip-Hop. It has soul and grooved nicely.. in comparsion to todays R&B/Hip-Hop - ie. Usher, Timbalake.

-----

I just don't get alot of you ppl.?

You really think producers are willing to turn down paying gigs?

-----

Yes, producers including myself, turn down money all the time. Thier can be a whole range of reason for why they/we do.

----

I agree theirs has been like 4-5 beats in the past 3 years that were nice. Thats not saying shit though when your talking about a Legend like Pete who just 5 years ago, hadn't put out an LP I couldn't list to front to back in his entire career.

(go Figure!?!)Lookin the latest and big act commin out of NY now,if y'all
still love Hip Hop is hard tell.......

BTW, all I'm sayin is Pete is Still Nice!! He don't need s SP 1200 to be nice!!

By elmacaco Fri May 20, 2005 10:46 pm
Yeah Philly, you can still tell a difference with 12 bit, but usually only when you know it was produced by someone who uses 12 bit. Some 12 bit machines have a sound unlike the SP-1200 which is what everybody ID's as 12 bit.

I ain;t saying hip hop is from the Suburbs, but Pete Rock is from Mt Vernon, and that's a suburb, not the city. It has projects, but so does CT, although I can;t front, there are some places in Conn. that scare me more than the South South.
