I once saw a Dj Shadow interview where he said something that i think is really true. He said beat making is like a muscle.
You said you haven't made much for a year or so. You got to exercise the muscle and keep it fit. It's the same for every thing, think of a footballer who hasn't played in a year or a golfer. They're not going to walk out after doing nothing for a year and play their best game.
Shadow was talking about making the private press. he hadn't made beats in a long time cause he was on tour etc. He thought to himself he'd never match the UNKLE album and felt all pressured
sounds to me like you are putting the pressure on yourself. You say you're on the verge of something great?
You'll never do anything great if you think you're going to sit down and making the best sht ever because you are trying to see the finished beat and don't start with a great sample or nice kick or snare or whatever.
You got to just build it slow, relax and try just working on some sounds first. These'll probably inspire the whole beat.
In shadow case he decided to do something as technical as possible a forget about the musical aspect, that was monosylabic which he made fromm a single two bar loop.
This sht happens me from time to time and i find making sounds works. Just sit down and work for a couple of hours on making nice kicks snares, whatever and then they'll be ready for when it comes back to you.
Good luck
