higher output level would be good, but I aint shellin out no $400 for it.
An article I read that breaks down bitdepth and samplerate in laymans terms described bits as "levels of difference in volume". Basically, the higher the bits, the more fluctuations and nuances in volume differences that are captured.
So, a 12 bit sample would have fewer "levels of difference in volume", and therefore would be relatively more uniform in volume level within the sample.
Basically, the 60 converting 16 bit to 12 is, for lack of a better term, similar to "compression"--- a change in the dynamics so that there are fewer relative differences in volume level. Like compression, the conversion to lower bit depth reduces the dynamic range.
this would explain why sounds are "thicker" on 12 bit samplers, and also why some people mistakenly assume the sp1200 has a built-in compressor. Methinks this also explains the relatively low output of the 60.
