notice the freq response charts they are different, the 58 has more rolloff in the low end becuz its designed as a vocal mic and the 57 is designed as an instrument mic

Thanks for showing me the frequency plots, but I already said in my first post that there is a difference in sound between these two mics. I just said, the difference in sound is
due to the pop shield/grill construction. I said the electronics inside i.e.
cartridge design, is the same.
The trick of screwing the bulb off an SM58 is well known among recording and live engineers. You're right, the 57 goes a little lower than the 58; that's mainly because the lack of a grille allows you to exploit the proximity effect further. The 57 also has a little more high end than the 58, because the pop shield on the 58 attenuates the high end it a little. But I said that already.

the same cartridge design. The main difference between them is in the
grille design. The SM58 was designed for vocal application and it uses a separate grille with a very effective pop filter. The SM57 was designed as an instrument microphone where smaller grille size is preferred. In this application the pop and wind are not usually a concern. The SM57 uses an integral resonator/grille assembly, where the grille is actually a part of the cartridge. These two grille designs place the diaphragm of the microphones in a different acoustical environment. First of all, the distance from the top of the grille to the diaphragm is significantly shorter on the SM57 compared to that of the SM58. This allows for closer sound pickup with even more pronounced proximity effect. Second, a different resonator/grille assembly design of the SM57 is responsible for its slightly higher output above 5 kHz.
