i get all my samples from vinyl. they might or might not be compressed, but that wasn't the point here. all i said was that i don't use a compressor in my beat making setup. they have a compressor at the studio i go to to record my beats, but i don't even remember what it looks like. i just bring my beats to the studio on a reel or on a minidisk, and we record the whole shyt to a single track (or two tracks if the beat is in stereo, but i mostly do everything in mono). once we have it recorded then it gets ran through a compressor and a limiter and whatever the fck effects and boxes they have there.

Beat God wrote:so if u have a kick by itself with no interaction with another instrument u wouldn't need eq cause there wouldn't be any reason to get rid of a competing frequency

but the thing is the kick might have frequencies in it that i DON'T WANT it to have, and that's why i eq it before i sample it!

see i do it like this: i record all my samples to tape first, usually without any eq at this point. i then run the signal from the tape machine to the eq and from there i eq it before going into the mpc. now when i have the sounds in the mpc i apply different attack/decay/filter settings and tune them differently, maybe even layer some with the other. doing it like this i can take one kick from a record and make it into half a dozen kicks that, while still sounding good, don't sound even remotely like the kick in the record.

This is what I do...If I have a kick that is weak, I layer it with one that is strong when filtered...That way, you get that hard bass, but the weak kick is still present. Same with snares...it's all about layering...

start with good samples. i can chop good drums and do nothin to them at all n they still knock hard as ****. also have a good sampler for drums.

i always make sure that my original kick or snare comes real loud of my vinyl onto my 1k... mess with your mixer and in record mode make sure you're really pushing it as far as you can without distorting your sample...

then i normalize in trim mode, THEN comes compression and e.q.ing but honestly i clean, loud sample off the go can help out a lot...

If you have your TT running through a mixer or preamp with EQ tweak that first and play till you get the desired result...or u can do this afterwards...though i find when i use my 2000xl to sample in while it is being EQ sounds much nicer. for the 1000 i do it after.
