16 MB onboard RAM a serious problem?

I have noticed that I can load my 32mb soundcard with many wavs but I can only load around 13-14 megabites of them into the mpc. Is this normal? This means I can only have around 6-7 programs per session. Is there any way around this issue? I just got this last week so i'm sure i'm missing something.
