..just to add to these main points: The SP machines also has incredible snappy VCAs. Never underestimate the importance of VCAs over their digital equivalents (MPC4000 etc etc).
Also, regarding the SP's legendary SSM2044 filters. On outs 3&4 and 5&6 they have set cutoff, pair 5&6 wider than 3&4. But dont forget that the outs 1 and 2 had a simple fixed AR (attack/release) envelope on the filter with about a 5ms attack, slower release. This filter is the most closed but is the one that a lot of user put little loops etc through because of the cool little AR filter envelope.
So, there really are dozens of reasons for the SP machines unique sound. In summary to the question that seems to come up every week:
Question: Can I get an SP sound by re-sampling on my MPC4000 at 12 bit?
Answer: No!!!

I REALLY DID STATE THE MAIN ONES because I KNOW OF MANY Who Sample their Samples Through the SP And Then DONT TOUCH IT AT ALL

most this is the sound they are lookin for and this
Primarilly comes through the converter and the Non-Variable filter................
