MPC ASIO support

Hi there. I have recently departed from AMIC, the company that develops software for the Akai pro range of samplers. I think you will find this information useful…

As part of the improved connectivity for the fourth generation of MPCs (MPC4000, 2500, 1000), we looked at implementing Asio and midi over the USB connector.
USB midi and audio will not be available in the nest release of MPC software, this is because there are certain limitations with the core design of the MPCs DSP architecture – it was not designed with USB midi and audio in mind. Due to the nature of the market (everything ha to be connected to PC these days), we are working on a work-around. This work-around takes use of the samplers built in Ram (just under 2 megabytes) by routing the USB signals into a software encoded DSP (actually running in the samplers ram). We have been able to achieve ASIO support. While only in beta .02, it enables the following:

ASIO functionality of MPC range (1000, 2500, 4000)
Achievable latency of under 6 ms (Test machine DELL P4 2500)
Use your mpc as a midi interface and soundcard (with fully independent 2in / 4 out operation)
Multiple outputs show up as ASIO mixer channels in logic and Cubase.
Multiclient drivers allow simultaneous audio handling of direct X, MME and ASIO streams.
Multiple MPC can be used on the same machine (USB bandwidth permitting) allowing any number of combinations of MPC i/o.

try blue box (for pc) and pad187 (for MAC). search on the 1k forum for both. they were originally written for the 1k but they can be used for the 2.5 as well

Maby Akai will sell a DSP chip upgrade in the future or somthing, kinda like Dave Smith's evolver.

Yes, I am skeptical...not saying that this wouldn't be a good feature. Audio and MIDI over USB..on an MPC The USB functions of the 2500/1000 are primative compaired to what that 4000 can do with Aksys. I am a non-believer...just like I don't believe a 3rd party programmer will figure out how to improve the MPC 3000s OS so that it would have graphic waveform display when editing samples

but... if it does remain true, what a feature! i can only imagine the possibilites

as far as i know there is no such thing as Akai Pro Europe

the roland sp606 doubles up as a midi and audio interface so other manafacturers have approached this idea, a dsp running in ram does seem a little odd tho, the program code to emulate a dsp chip could sit in ram but it still needs a processor to run that code, namely the one already in the mpc, so a chip not capable of a task is running an emulation of a chip that can ... hmm

also presumably when running as an audio midi interface it doesn't run as an mpc anymore, expensive audio midi card! you can get a midi interface and 2in/4out card for a couple of hundred bucks

there's no akai pro europe, there are various european distributors but only akai japan and akai pro america afaik

You beat me to it...getting around a DSP limitation by using the DSP to emulate a better DSP? That's not just a hardware workaround, that's a workaround of the second law of thermodynamics.
