Hey whats up I used the search function, wasn't able to find anything, so I'm gonna ask my question here.
I just bought a used MPC 2000 from an authorized akai dealer, I have 30 days to figure out if it works right, after that I can't return it, any other problems fall under the 90 day warrenty. Ok.
So I brought it home and plugged it in, put my mixer(tables) into the input and output it to my pc soundcard(which outs to my sterio unit, then to two speakers).
Also, I should mention the MPC did not come with any manuals or disks, just the unit and the powercord.
So I turn on the MPC and it says "MPC 2000 boot ROM V1.00" for a few seconds, then it says "Disk read error !!".
I downloaded what I think are the operating system files(MPC200.exe, MPC2000.sys) copied them to a floppy and tried turning it on with the disk in, same thing.
I have literally no idea how to get past this, if anyone can help a poor noob enter the magical world of touch pads and sequencing it would be much appreciated.
I should mention that I have a spare floppy drive I would like to try but I'm gonna wait for some replies before opening this baby up.
Peace

P.S. to hear some (experimental) shit I've produced with software and a mouse you can check www.myspace.com/walmartian

Format the disk in pc fat/fat16.

Only those 2 files go on the disk, start up with that disk, unzipped of course.

maybe the disk is bad. maybe the download is bad.
just something to think about.

I've tried 2 different disks and 2 different versions of those two files. They were both formatted using winXP(fat32) I don't know how to format it in any other file system.
I still get the same thing, "MPC200 boot ROM V1.00" and I can hear the disk drive working and I see the light go on and off, then "Disk read error !!"
So you think its just the disk and not the disk drive?
I'll keep trying different disks.

Ok never mind, it turns out winXP formats anything under 2 gigs as FAT/FAT16.
I'm formatting another floppy now.

I didn't want to make a new thread so I'm just reviving the one i already made, I searched the forum and searched for help elsewhere, so this is a last resort. I've been going through the manual learning the basic functions but I am having problems saving and loading. My question is; can sounds be saved to a floppy? I goto the Disk screen and put in the disk which I have saved on in the drive. I scroll to the file which I named something like DISKAAAAA.ALL and hit Do It, then hit load. It says loading for a minute then I assume the 4 sounds which I have programmed to the top 4 pads would be loaded. But in the program screen I push the pads and it says Snd:(No Sound). I am just confused whether or not sounds can even be saved thsi way or just program and sequencing information. I have a zip drive which isn't set up yet, and I want to learn more on this machine but i don't want to leave it on while I sleep.
Thanks in advance for helpful information, I know you must read these same questions alot but remember, you were once a beginner aswell and sarcastic comments don't help anything. I just want to make good sample-based music like you.

Please anyone, just tell me how to save and load the sounds I've sampled and I'll leave you alone and go back to reading my manual. I've read the saving parts and the chapter on Disk Operation again and again but It doesn't seem to work. I save, a file is created on the disk, then I turn the MPC off and on, load the disk but the sounds are nowhere to be seen.

pt3r wrote:How can you hear sounds if you don't load the in the memory of your mpc. The sequence only 'explains' to your MPC how it should play the different sounds, it contains no sounds as such. The programs krux is refering to are the files that eplain how each sound is assigned to the pads of your mpc. You will need to load those as well or you will have no sound coming out of your mpc. At least your question was posted in the right forum. 8)

So am I only saving song and sequence information? How do I go about saving sound and programming information?

working out your own problems is the best way to learn stuff, if someone tells you how to do it, the next time it happens, you'll have to go back and ask again/re-read what they said. There's a lot of people that'd do well to read this thread and take note of what happened here today. Then go home and read their manual.

Help please! I'm a vet MPC user and I've been through the ringer having solved multiple issues with my MPC 2000 over the years, but I'm officially stuck on this one. This is a related thread so I figured I'd ask here because it's a similar issue...

I turn on my MPC and the screen reads "MPC boot ROM v1.00". However, after this I don't get prompted with "Insert MPC 2000 disc" like I used to. Instead, it goes immediately to "Disc read error!!". The floppy drive clicks initially, but after the first click it makes no more sound. I have MANY boot discs.....I tried them all.....I even formatted brand new floppy's on my PC (FAT 16) and downloaded 1.72 onto them and tried those......still nothing. Lastly, I tried downloading 1.72 onto a ZIP disc seeing as I use ZIP to save and load sounds, just never to boot from. I read up on how to boot from ZIP....have both switches in the down position so that SCSI 5 is recognized and Termination is enabled, however, even with both switches down, the disc in the drive, and the drive powered on, my MPC doesn't cycle and recognize the drive. I still just get "Disc read error!!" after the initial "MPC boot ROM v1.00". Anyone know what's up with my machine??? And better yet, what I can do to fix it?!?!?!
