Yes it is.

Resampling causes loss of audio quality no doubt.

Akai should make a digital resampling-feature.. That could REALLY be useful.. And easy to implent aswell.

What do you mean? The resampling process is digital...?

Nope, the resampling-process is analog all the way. If it was digital then the audio you resample wouldn't change "character" or lose quality or whatever..

Are you talking about the resampling process with older MPC's, when you have to use cables outside the MPC to route the audio back in? I meant the MPC1000, which have the internal resampling function. Are we misunderstanding eachother?

I don't think we are (misunderstanding eachother)...

I AM talking about the 1000, not the 2000.

Even though the 1000's resampleprocess is internal, it's still analog. you can easily hear the difference between your original sample and the resampled sample, no matter how you set your master level. try it.

I actually try to get around without resampling because of this..

Digital resampling would be one of the best (and simpliest) upgrades in my opinon.

What? Why the heck would Akai make the resampling process digital? I am not doubting what you are saying, I'm just pissed off at Akai  So the best possible way to track out the beat will be through the S/Pdifs?

well.. I track out from mainout+12+34 assignables.. into my DIGI002. I'm satisfied with the soundquality on that (it's not like resampling). I simply don't have time for doing it with only two channels (digital). But yes, tracking with the digital outs is the "cleanest" way.

Back to resampling:
I've just tried something which should've worked, but failed...

Routing the digital out to the the digital in on the 1000 and recording with the digital in as source... Nothing... I don't get it...?

If someone can explain to me why this doesn't work, i would appreciate it.

Okey.. But do you know as a fact that the resampling process is analog? Digital resampling could as well produce som artifacts as a result of highering and lowering the on different sounds, etc.

Yes, i'm a 100% sure.

MAIN OUT = Analog, SPDIF = Digital.

You cannot record the "digital out" only the "in" and as i stated earlier, you get no sound from routing the "out" to the "in".. not even feedback noise..

Okey but how do you know that it doesn't record the signal that goes to the main outs, before it actually comes to the main outs (before the DA-converter)? Where did you read it?

Didn't read it anywhere.. it just makes sense. The Main out IS not the "MAIN OUT", before it goes past the D/A converter.

Plus

The sound would't behave like that if it was resampled digitally. Sure, there's artifacts which could have an affect to the sound. But were talking about a whole other shape here..

hah. i always thought recording the main out was digital.

thanks for the tip. i didn't use that for resampling the whole song anyway, but it's good to know.

Frankly I'm not convinced by the 'just makes sense' theory.

Someone should ask Akai about this, maybe I will...

Jesus.. Now this is just straight ignorance.. Have you tried resampling anything?

"Frankly I'm not convinced by the 'just makes sense' theory." Give me a break. you make it sound like i didn't put facts on the table at all.

But go ahead, ask AKAI, they will tell you the same as I already did.

sorry if i offended you, but settle down. i'm just the type of person who needs to see accurate tests or get the official word to be 'convinced'.

i guess people who don't unquestioningly take your opinion as fact are 'ignorant'?

when i have tried to make technical claims on the forum in the past i provided details such as ' i used factory sample x with veloc. set at y and master level at z, then opened the resulting files in sound forge and saw a clear difference'.

Even if there _is_ a problem with levelchange or distortion on resampling, that also doesn't prove it is being done in analog, as someone else mentioned.

as you say, if i really care about this at some point in the future, i will test it myself or ask akai, whichever seems easier.

I'll have to side with Sleepers on this one. Without a schematic, there is no way to tell. And actually, if you want to go by the "what makes sense" theory, it would actually make more sense that it was resampled digitally without going to to analog first. Here are the 2 reasons I believe this:

1. Why would they design it to go through the D/A converter just to have to route it right back through an A/D converter... seems redundant to me.

2. Assuming they did design it to sample the Analog signal, there would have to be a physical switch to route the analog signal back to the A/D converter... whereas if it is sampling the digital signal, a simple digital logic circuit does the trick.

It "makes more sense" to me that it would be sampling the digital signal BEFORE it gets converted to analog.
