Have you ever examined a DJ premier track? Anyways, most of his tracks follow this pattern (and they arent too repetative) they use two bars.
2 bars - 2 bars - 2 bars - 2 bars of variation-
repeat.
there really arent any chorus section-withexception to a break for scratch-or dub in of some lines from a movie etc.
Really this has worked for me pretty well. Make sure your little "hook" or phrase doesnt really repeat its self more than once in the 2 bars. Then just reapeat the 2 bars 3 times, and on the 4th time, make a variation of the two bars. Most of the time if you come up with a catchy 2 bar hook-the variation will fall in place because it will "satisfy" the first 6 bars? youll feel yourself waiting for that part to hit? ya know.
peace
btw, alot of hiphop hooks are 2 bars, just variations-chorus are added.
