this is a translation of what's causing a 10 page thread over in the 1k forums.
i have installed this 3rd party os and i'm astounded. essentially, it gives the 1k all of the power of the 2500 minus the extra hardware. it has less bugs than the akai os, too. new folder bug is gone, as well as other issues.

this is amazing. the beta is free, the full version is gonna be about 20 bucks.
not a bad price to turn your 700 dollar machine into one that equals a 1600 dollar machine.

it's given us grid edit, direct recording, and a bunch of other really nice features including a way to change the tune/volume/etc of all pads on a pgm at one time. this is absolutely incredible.

hopefully, you guys are next on the gift list. the guy obviously knows his stuff. if he can adapt this 1000 os 3.0 onto the 2500, we will essentially have the same machine - only difference will be your extra hardware. which will still prove useful.

this japanese jenius may very well be your personal jesus. give him time and he may well save you all from the buggy os akai has released.

just thought i'd let you know - salvation may very well be at hand.[/quote]

thats interesting akai should probably hire this guy if the os works out well

who knows he might be an undercover akai programmer testing bugs and seeing what people want so if something goes wrong akai cant be blamed just some random programmer

if not akai will just end up copying some of the stuff he is doing making the whole ploy obselete, in a way he will just be doing the thinking for them FREE LABOR

haha in case something goes wrong?

i'll tell you if my mpc grows legs and starts zapping my country ass country town.

i doubt it's an akai programmer because he just essentially eliminated the need for a 2500 - for now.

on a better note
WHEN akai catches wind of this they have 3 options

1 - the stupid thing to do - shut down the japanese jenius (but by then we will all share the 1000 os like an std, leaving them to contend with hushing up 3.0). this would be suicide, they'd be competing with their own product.

2 - say **** the mpc1000 and beef up the 2500 os REAL hardcore to try to compete with their own product. this wouldn't be AS bad for akai as a compay.

3 - the best option. make the os's for the 1000 and 2500 samples OPEN SOURCE so different strains of os's could come out, get merged, etc. this would be the best solution for the company as it would save them the work of coding, beta testing, getting flak for having sh!tty operating systems, etc.

the latter would be great for you guys too, AND us because we wouldn't have to worry about buggy akai os's anymore.

option 1 = suicide
option 2 = masochism
option 3 = masturbation

Yes, good for us, but for Akai...they'd still have to release an OS of their own (including coping with the bugs), cause customers have a right for a working OS delivered with their purchase, without having to dig for it on the Internet.

Plus, they would have to give out a lot of detailed info about their hardware publicly for the 3rd party programmers, which reduces their lead over the competition. Which is probably the main reason why software for such machines is never Open Source.

Still I'm happy to see this development, I'm dying to see an Open Source OS for a drum machine/sampler.

i don't think it'd hurt em
i mean it's not like other companies can't hire peeps who know how to code stuff like that

basically if someone can see the options/layout, etc of a sampler they can find people to code something similar.

akai could continue to release their mpcs with the last OS dropped, but mention that other os's exist. they could disclaim damages, etc.

it could breathe a LOT of life into what seems to be a dying breed of sampler that still could potentially have decades of life to em.

Let's hope Akai sees it the same way.

Even an open source development kit for the older samplers would be so nice. And they wouldn't have to be afraid of losing market shares...

yeah hopefully

there's a serious disconnect between akai and their customer base

and that's there these forums should come in. keyword SHOULD.

with this new update for the 1000 i don't see what the difference between the two now. that kinda sucks because i used to have the 1000. i sold it and saved my money up for the 2500 because i liked the grid edit feature and the 8 outs. but with this new "OS" for the 1000, i feel like i just been ripped off. well other then "i like the feel of this one better." or "it doesn't feel like a toy." all i know is that akai needs to get on with their shit.

yeah. it's gonna piss a lot of 2500 users off - even more so than they already are.

which might hurt akai, forcing them to get their act together.
the 2500 was a nice idea but too much is wrong with it right now. the 1000 is just an advanced sampler at this point in its life. it's gonnna be a classic.

the 2500 is still salvageable of course, we just need a JJ to write you guys an os for it that deals with the bugs. without the bugs it's a great machine, and you may very well need the extra hardware.

gotta shut down my studio - storm's a comin'

Well..it will not piss off this MPC 2500 user. Why would you think it would?
There isn't one feature in that OS that blows my mind. I guess since I have a studio full of tools, its hard to impress me. If I wanted a cheap drum machine, I would have purchased one.

The only thing I really need an MPC to do..is to playback my sampled drums/loops and sequence keyboards. Anything more than that is a bonus.

Honestly, only kids sitting around in their bedrooms would give any thought/energy to why the MPC 1000 has the same or more features than a 2500. I am about to start using an MPC 3000 which doesn't have a fraction of the 1000/2500. But as long as it samples my drums and sequence without crashing....its more than enough..

wow
forgive me for laughing

but is this truly coming from the most staunch 2500 defender i've ever spoken to, the fellow who called the 2500 the "latest and greatest" drum machine?

and this is why i'd think it would

not knocking the random programming guy buuuuttttt

he has not delivered a bug free os as of yet just like akai hasnt

we'll see what comes of this though, if anything akai will just add more to the 2500 as they have been doing with the previous os updates

the durable pads and extra midi outputs still set it apart among other things
