low pass filter tips

looking for some advice on using the low pass filter to create a sub bass sort of sound to fill out a track and keep everything nice and together, i cn do it no problem but it sometimes sounds quite harsh and rumbly when u take it as low as 20, and especially when its linked.
any thoughts.
