Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By NsOakland6 Fri Sep 15, 2006 6:34 am
I had a 2kxl for a min about a year and a half ago then sold it but I'm about get another one MAYBE.

But I'm trying to find out the method for making a whole beat with just the MPC and Samples (SOUNDS NOT RECORDS) with the limit of 4 programs?
I'm talkin Drum beat, synth, piano, organ, bass, etc.... I don;t plan on using a whole bunch of keyboard sounds but the theory I have now limits it to only 2 programs left after drum beat (1 program) and Bassline (1 program), so then I only have 2 programs left to stretch a sound out to play a piano or synth on. I've pretty much figured so far that i have to basically make custom Kits (programs) for a beat (seq) everytime so i won't be limited to just the sounds in ready made programs i have. just pick and choose samples and kit it up right then. and I'm thinking for the keyboard sounds maybe you could keep a kit open to stretch it out, play whatever keys you need then purge (i've never used that function) the program of all the samples you didn't use which would bassically be the "keys" you didn't use and somehow do it again with another sound without erasing the samples of the sound you just did. So basically u'd build up a program of say 5 instruments but they would only each have the few samples you used to make whatever melody or chord and thats it. Maybe I'm Crazy and wrong I'm doing this all off what I remember about the 2KXL and what I'm researching. I can't afford a MPC4000 so I'm trying to see if I can get a 2kXL to do some of the major things I need it to do.

well thats 1 thing i've been trying to find outt them about them. How many programs can you use on the 1000 and 2500? plus i hear you can't edit as much and i will be make-n some beats with record samples too so i do want the full editing capability unless the 1000 is enough. plus i can get a used 2kxl anywhere between $500-$800, i got my last one for $600 but i wasn't using my head with it and looking for a feature that on it that i now don't need so my mind was just all in a whole different place so i sold it.

If it turns out my theory is correct i'm just going to get another 2kxl and replace the drive with a card reader.

Thanks for the video post nicole...

Anywayz...
Dont look at four programs as a limitation...
Look at it as an advantage...
Most earlier samples only had one program to use...
Four is plenty....
I load up drums on 1 program
Sample on another
bass on another...
That leaves me with a free proram...
You can combine drum and sample programs together...I know ure not gonna use 64 pads of drums and samples so just put them together....
Yous your head...
Put on your thinking cap...
Maybe the xl dont work for you but it works for me...
I think four is plenty... :!:
I think the 1k can use 28 programs at once...
Thats cool but I have no need for that

theres some sort of way to use more than 4 programs & automate the switches but i've never bothered to try so i dont know.

if that doesnt work then what you're asking is possible but its pretty damn tedious. i've made a couple beats where i treated the banks (A B C D) on a pgm as their own "patch." ie: drums on A bass on B synth on C whatever other sound on D.

personal opinion is that you should get a keyboard w/ a sequencer. most sounds sound wack on autochrom mode which makes the mp a bad choice if you wanna make keyboard beats & only have loot for one machine

Yea using program changes...
but program changes suck!!
Plus it gets confusing!
And u need to add a blank bar when doing so...
I hate program changes...
Could never get right...
Takes practice

Well that basically falls under what i'm saying but more compact. By what we are both saying, i could have the drum sounds(including ANY single sound samples), the bassline, record sample if needed, and a good number of other keyboard sounds under 1 program. But my whole thing is can that be done? I didn't use the purge ft. when i had mine so i don't know how that really works. Can i really take one sample hit that 16 sumthin button(?) play whatever melody or chord and then purge any unused samples after? or would that still only count as 1 sample?

Also i just saw a vid on the 2500 and i see you can do real time stretching on it which should be perfect for keyboard sounds but i'm asuming the 2kxl can't do that? and does anyone know if the 2500 is under the 2kxl or better?

(DISREGARD PART OF THIS REPLY I NEED SOME SLEEP I DIDN'T EVEN REMEMBER WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT AUTOMATING THE SWITCHES WHEN I STARTED TYPING THIS REPLY SORRY)

that sounds exactly what i'm talking about but once again more compact and organized. as far as the sounds that are on "autochrom" id agree with that if the 2kxl real can't do the real time stretching so that the sample won't speed up and down as u go up and down octaves and i don't know if you get the pan effects in some major samples like some big string/syn pad samples that come off of other boards stereo.

Thing is i had the 2kxl, triton extreme, motif, korg micro korg, dx100, and some sample sounds had the all at once at one time but shortly after i started mess-n wit mpc's (had the 1000 for a couple of days) the building i had my studio in got sold and i had to move so i just sold everything and went into real estate for a sec to stack and while i'm still waitng to get all the way back i want to get a mpc other then the 4000 i can do my thang on until later. if push comes to shove i'll just have to cash out for the 4000 (ouch)

like i said b4 though i was trip-n when i had the other mpc's i wasnt even think-n of what i could REALLY do and how to do it. I was also looking for another retarded feature that i used on boards a lot that i really don't need thats why i went from the 1000to the 2000 i a matter of days.

I have never even tried....Like Jac said, I just combine sounds and such....I may have to try program changes just to see what its like....I don't like the fact that you have to leave a bar blank though, sounds stupid!!!!

Before I switched to the XL I had the classic 2000 and I made plenty of whole songs with just sounds. The 2000 only had one program.....

just load up your sounds on the XL, kicks and snares and whatever else. As far as the synth sound, bass, etc.....I can just load up those sounds with a middle C note and auto-chro the sound and play the pads like a piano......I did the same on the classic 2000 without the auto-chro feature and still was able to play a nice bassline......

just use your MPC as a sequencer and spend every wakeing
minute scratching toghether money for sounds/synths how soon
we forget the MPC is probably the most powerfull and versatile
sequencer on the planet

hummm food for thought

doesnt 4 programs give u the option to use 256 different sounds in the same sequence?

and that isnt enough?

By The Associate Fri Sep 15, 2006 2:11 pm
Isn't 32 sounds at once enough????????????

Isn't 256 sounds loaded enough????????????

Are you trying to duplicate a symphony?
