Post your views and questions about the Akai MPC2500

I know this is probably a silly question, but I am a new mpc user and I was just wondering who is JJ. Or what does JJ stand for.

While I wish Akai's updates would be quicker, and there are things I'd like changed with the 2500 (e.g. filters on a per-track basis, midi-sync to be 100% perfect, proper-sounding timestretching like I can get using £75 software) I'm very wary of a third party coming along with their own OS, promising far more than Akai are delivering. If Akai had designed the MPC with the features offered by JJ in mind, surely Akai would be implementing these features?

Everybody has a laundry list of things they would like to see in an MPC OS. In fact, if you take the time to look through the forums of any company that produces similar products, you will read similar responses.

None of these companies produce beta operating systems for the public to try out. None of them produce daily, weekly, or even monthly updates. Why? Because you will have what is currently going on at the JJ Site. The JJ OS is nothing more than a beta OS that you had to pay $30 to be on the beta testing team. Nothing is stopping anyone from using this beta OS. But call it what it is. I will be impressed when there isn't daily, weekly, or monthly updates. That would mean that the OS is finished.

Time stretching using computers/software will most likely always produce faster/better results than an MPC. That feature is in practically every music production software I own. SO why stop with time stretching. How about restoration effects to take out pops/clicks of sounds sampled from records? How about making the MPC a complete digital audio production workcenter like Pro Tools, Logic, Digital Performer, etc....

J, I don't agree that software should be able to produce better timestretching results than hardware, especially when that hardware costs five or ten times the software. It's not like the 2500 is trying to manage an OS, Logic, 10 plugin instruments + double the amount of FX. There are Reaktor ensembles put together by enthusiasts which put the 2500 to shame in that respect. For me, if you advertise timestretching as a feature, it better be bloody good, and I don't think I'm expecting too much here.

Yes I know everyone has a laundry list of things they want fixing, and I did say I wish Akai's updates were a little more regular. Just because someone doesn't post twice a day don't think they don't know what's going on...

You may disagree because you don't know whats in the software of an MPC versus what is in a $300-$400 program.

The operating system of most MPCs are primitive compared to the programs I mentioned above. The programs have the added benefit of running on computers whose processor, memory, etc are far superior than what's under the hood of these MPCs. Even the MPC 4000 is no match for (spec wise) for the software samplers or sequencers on the market. MPCs have limitations...they are not expandable beyond a certain point. Can't upgrade the processor...can only use up to 512MBs of memory...

You really can't compare software to dedicated hardware. Hardware does cost money. And you are expecting too much for an MPC to timestretch as well as other software. I don't believe Akai ever led the pack when it comes to sample manipulation tools like time stretching. Other companies have products that do a much better job such as Roland and their timestretching technology (a much bigger company). So although I may feel what you are saying, you may want to invest in a product that fits your needs. Time stretching and the effects in these recent MPCs are for pre-production. I have all sorts of software that is far superior than any MPC in this regard. The MPC series has other strengths though.

I didn't mean to imply there is a laundry list of things that need fixing. The 2500 is pretty solid. There is a laundry list of new functions that forum members/hobbyist want/desire. But all these extra features that many want in these latest MPCs will never be superior than what software products have to offer. Maybe Akai's next $3000-$4000 MPC may be able to compete...temporarily..

Knowing what's going on has nothing to do with how many times you post...that goes for me as well. But many of you really don't know what's going on...have no idea what it takes to program MPCs or other software...and just post what ever comes to your mind. Do yourself a favor and do some research on similar products. You will find similar results to what you see here.

You actually believed it would be ready? They have to reduce the 60 bugs to a more respectable 30 bugs.

I always knew it wouldn't be ready. Even if they released during the time they have advertised..it wouldn't have been ready. Akai has put so much resources into the current OS. What makes anyone think that a 3rd Party would come along and drop an OS that is more stable?

Really? I wouldn't know because I wouldn't use that piece of machinery for any reason. Wow, before the 3rd party OS was released...I didn't here any grumbling about your machine and its OS. You were running around talking about you had a baby MPC 2500...or that we are using an 1000XL. Get serious will you? That JJ OS had over 30 bugs. I never heard a peep from you about how unstable it was until JJ announced a new OS

Don't really care if that OS is so bad...I use an MPC 2500 (I am in the right thread, no?)...don't really care about the 3rd party OS for the 1000.

This is all about my baby....the MPC 2500. You heard it here first. The 3rd party OS will not be more stable than the OS I am using right now...

Not to be an a$$ but I have to agree. I support the idea of 3rd party developers but still we need fixes for what we have without losing features and until that comes along from whomever it's not worth going on about it. No one here should be that interested in this o.s. because we have these features already, giving us another way to view them may spark some but we have issues that need to be addressed without comprimising. This is great for the 1000 but for the 2500 :?
For those who are interested Im not knocking but DANG there are enough issues with what I have so then why aquire different ones just because? The 2500 is fine, just solve the MIDI&saving issues without having to lose ANYTHING then I'll be impressed, after then add anything you want then I'll be more impressed. Good luck. Dont take it personal its just an opinion I wanted to share. I do think JJ is talented though

18 hours a day, my ass! That leaves you with 6 hours a day to eat, sleep, $hit, shower, and shave. What about work? How do you fit THAT into your schedule? Don't tell me your one of the many here that "work in the industry", cause I'll still call bull$hit unless you can actually prove that or ANYTHING that just spewed outta your fingertips! You done now? Or do I gotta go grab myself a clothes-pin to put over my nose... cause it REEKS of bull$hit in this thread now! :p

I'm gonna ignore all that other sh*t since you really have no clue about product design and marketing.
There is more different about the 1k and 2500 than those cheap *ss pads.
Go buy one and crack it open next to your 1k.
But I will say this I know why you don't have a 2500 and keep crying about $2k being a lot of money.
You are right it's probably more than 18 hours a day...........MUSIC IS MY JOB  and the only time I work from a studio other than mine is when I have no choice.
Just takes away the headaches.
It's really funny how the 1k people still wish they had 2500's.
No matter what JJ does it will still be a 2500 wannabe.
