Try it. I've always used and never had a problem.

thamessage wrote:if you're plugging it in halfway then maybe you're only inputting 1 side (tip L and ring right or other way around) in that case there is no problem. but if you input 2 into 1 with a y cable there will be impedance problems that will result in degrading of the signal and frequency response. it might sound ok but it would probably sound better using a mixer instead of a y cable.
but if it sounds good to you then it's not a big deal.

The best way to get stereo samples without paying $195 to upgrade to 3.10 is getting a line-in to 1/4 inch stereo cable. The trick is to not plug in the line-in side completely. Only push in until you feel the first little click and leave it there. The cable will pick up both channels as if it were one channel. Ta-da! You now have stereo samples!

No, you don't have a stereo sample with this method, it is not picking up both channels as if it were one channel, you have a mono sample that is coming down one side of the Y-cable, it is not mixing the two stero channels into one.
I don't use a Y cable. I use a stereo 1/4'' to 1/8'' cable and there are no phasing or impedance problems.
