thankfully, modern electronics no longer have to be so comically oversized

Exactly, I was something to grab and weights alot. 1000 seems like a toy.

It feels like hardware that you can pick up and PLAY, not a big metal box sitting on a desk, more like a drum. Pick it up, put it on your lap, move it around, get comfortable, and bang some beats. It's also easier to take places with you, not like a 500 (which is more portable but lacks some serious features), sturdy, small, portable. To me it feels like a solid piece of hardware, a solid block of funk. I've known people who had 2ks, they sat on the desk, immobile, not something you'd move let alone put on your lap. I'm a n00b with owning an mpc but the 1k feels great.

I agree 100....ive used a 2500 a xl and the 1k is the best for me....i just work faster on it..and it does feel like somthing i can just play

I am thinking that Akai may completely revamp their product line this week. They will end production of the 1000, 2000XL, and 4000. Their new line up will be the MPC 50, 500, 2500, 3500, and 4500.

i dont agree that the overall construction of the 1k is weak - it is as solid and heavy as all hell

i do agree that the pad skimping was a total disaster - the 1k pads are too hard and clearly unreliable

my '< bar' button takes a firm press to connect, making me think other buttons could go out too

earwolf - my immediate next project after the pad fix is to find 3rd party button switches that are reportedly very durable, and cheaper. i won't be selling those, i'll just put a link to em on my site so people can buy em.

yeah man. home modding of these machines is deceptively simple...basic electronics knowledge, soldering experience, ability to google...

I started out making music on a 2k years ago, then i sold it for buying a mac (8200? something likw 100 Mhz ;) and synths.
Since them i had the usual computer stuff going on. Virtual instruments, tons of updates, tons of troubles, some fun too.

a week back i bought my first mpc since then. the MPC 1000.
i hadn´t that much fun making music since years ago, i even didn´t switch on tha mac once for making music.

it´s like coming back home after a looooong time. I don´t care bout the pads, mine are working fine allthough i bought it second hand, must have two years of age.

The 1000 rocks.
