wow. how can you possibly say that and think sampling is ok? don't find the quick way around it, complex. that's bullsht. go learn EVERY INSTRUMENT IN THE WORLD so you never have to sample again. stop regressing the musical artform!

"scratching" on the mpc is the first step toward a larger skill that is largely unique from scratching. go drink you some chamomile and relaxxxxxx

Im not sayin samplin is, im sayin fakin scratches is and samplin other peeps hiphop and not diggin for original samples is.

When it comes to samplin propa records and original samples peeps have dug... thats what progresses the artform, and stops it from becomin stale.

Nuff peeps pride themselfs on theyre diggin, its as big part of it (and can be bigger) then actual sequencin, it defines ur style in the sense of what u learn to dig for and the type of sounds and styles u dig, just as much as how u use them. And its wack when kids come along and just sample that sh!t from other hiphop... and i dont understand how peeps are actually defendin that.

Also I play trumpet (have for 15 years), i played in orchestra's and sh!t.. and played guitar since 11 years back. And can obviously read and write music (bass and treble clef). I have a very indepth understandin in music. (When u mention about takin time to learn instruments). And i been f**kin with records, turntables and beats since 10 years back (turntables longer then beats).

"scratchin" on the mpc is def not a step towards anything good. If peeps want scratchin on theyre tracks they should hook up with a real dj and incorperate them or learn themselfs.

As for the "findin the quick route", thats all these peeps are doing, tryin to take quick routes instead of learning properly and puttin in the work. Which i dont understand why they do because learning in the fun part (everythings always a learnin curve).. but they just want a quick easy way all the time.

c0mplex, I think you missed Antonym's point...he's saying that to fully believe what you're saying, you would also have to believe that sampling (in general) is just "findin' the quick route" to making music. Because of instead of "learning properly and puttin in the work", cats are just taking previously played pieces of music and flipping it. Sampling a scratch and replaying it on the MPC is the same thing like sampling a horn or a piano and replaying it. Even though MPC scratching doesn't have the history in Hip Hop like you said, the fundamental point of taking a sound and flipping it is the same. To me, it seems like the so-called fundamentals of Hip Hop producing only exist in the first place due to limitations of earlier machines. If the technology is there, USE IT!!! Maybe it won't come out as dope...but SH!T, that's what's expected.

Get it c0mplex? You're kinda contradicting yourself with your argument.

Also, with regard to sampling other Hip Hop producers, I've watched vids from seasoned vets such as Ski Beats and Just Blaze where they openly admit to doing it. What are you basing these "rules" that you speak of on? I thought that the only rule was to make dope shit!!!

i been away from the forum for a hot minute. but im back and ive read and posted a few things to help cats out.

but i began to notice a common theme with one of the 'new' members posts. he seems to think that the only acceptable way to approach making music is the way he believes in and he enjoys flaming people who dare to differ.

COMPLEX. If you cannot offer any help or positive advice to others what the hell are you doing here? By all means, do your thing but respect the right of others to do their thing their way.

Us MPC heads on this forum got love for music and making beats. Occasionally someone gets flamed if they really deserve it, makes us all laugh and keeps the forum lively. But we're really here to learn and help each other with ideas and suggestions.

What you got is a COMPLEX. The name says it all. So chill out before things get ugly around here. Just make your music dammit!

U peeps dont have a clue.. hiphop is based on findin beats in old unknown records.. from the start.. it also evolved into flippin them.. but its no short cut to music..

I can read and write music... i can play trumpet, guitar.. and a few other things but the first 2 in depth (over 15 years). And Hiphop aint no fast track when done properly..

It takes longer and more work / practice to learn to dj then play instruments, much more. And same with makin beats if u do and learn properly, includin the engineerin side (layerin, filtering, eq'n, compression etc etc).

And anyone can make a beat and chop sample.. but to make it actually sound "hiphop" not many can do,, thats why premo, pete rock and peeps alike will always be such a lenth apart in skill compared to so many.. plus its not just skills its also mindstate.

Thats wack peeps justifyin theyre bullsh!t. FAKES, ur justifyin fakin somin, which means u ARE FAKING!

First, you think just because you can do it, that everyone else sampling can? Second, you think just because you have the musical knowledge, that you possess the musical creativity that it took to create the sounds you sample?

c0mplex wrote:It takes longer and more work / practice to learn to dj then play instruments, much more.

ARE YOU SERIOUS???
Tell the people that you sample that it was harder for you to press record than it would've been for you to learn that instrument, and come up with the groove all by yourself!

Let's be realistic here...I don't take anything from the argument that sampling is creative (I'm an advocate for that argument as I sample myself and know the work it takes to perfect the craft...besides, I've defended it enough in the past against haters that think anyone can do it), but when people start to say that it's harder than actually learning how to play these instruments, that's a line I can't bring myself to cross. It's like the difference between taking a picture of something, and painting it yourself! Of course one's easier but it don't take nothing from the artistic value of the other.

if we really wanted to get to the bare bones of it all then we should all just sell our MPC's, buy a drum kit and learn how to play the drums....cause isn't a "drum machine" a "shortcut" to learning how to play the drums? I actually thought the whole scratch routine was pretty cool....impressed me.

Let's not sit on a throne and act like one way of doing things is better...if you don't like it don't do it or use it....stick to what you like...but to try and stand off against change and progression is a waste of time because it's gonna happen....not only in music but in life.

Exactly!

c0mplex, it cost you nothin' to pay us no mind!

and accepting change or something new doesn't mean you have to do it or be involved in it...I'm still a purest at heart and I stilll pick and choose what I like and want to be a part of when it comes to the new stuff.....but to totally dismiss it won't work cause it is gonna happen.

Before watching the vid i was think thinking it would be wack but the scracthes are ok even if it's off beat sometimes !

Except at the end, i would have thought he did this with turntables if i didn't have the visual.

Cool vid !

Ps : It's funny when some people blame others who are scratching with a mpc while they cut with cd turntables.

ALL WE CARE IS ABOUT HOW IT SOUNDS RIGHT ?

By Season Sat May 12, 2007 1:22 am
since we are on the topic is this another "easy way out"?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LFUva7Xe94

I was impressed as hell when I first heard him do this back in the day and I would have loved to hear what Tom Morello says in the defense of hip hop "purism".

I used to spin turntables but had sh!t go on, once i got settled again i needed to get some tables but i was more focused on makin beats and i got my cd table given to me for some beats so i wont complain good for hooks and as a production tool. Its still like cuttin with record, still same hand movements and fader movements, infact its harder coz all movements are majorly scaled down due to small platter, and also fact that platter doesnt move.. but i deal with it, thats totally diff to what was bein discussed here.

And some of u dont seem to get this.. u dont seem to get diggin, and the difference between usin somin u found diggin and flippin it, and the bullsh!t u lot talkin about samplin from hiphop records, theres a big difference there.. real shame because ur missin out on alot and its all progression.

Im done, do what u like still not like im gonna stop anybody, but remember when peeps give u props on how tight ur drums are, just remember thats some one elses, diggin, choppin, pitchin, layering, filtering, eq, compression skills.. Even if u "flip theyre sound" they already hiphop drums so u dont have to do f**k all, nothin compared to the work u can put in to make ur own drums sound tight from standard sampled and chopped (unprocessed) drums (even shit thin drums in cases) . Its much more rewarding to go about it properly, and u will develope ur own sound, from what u learn to dig, how u work ur eq.. compression.. layerin etc etc etc, otherwise samplin drums from hiphop records u just missin out

c0mplex wrote:Why not get a turntable and mixer... and learn to scratch, fakin that sh!t is bullsh!t.

Is it really that much trouble to learn? and fake scratchin just wack, not only sound wack but the principle, especially when dj's are the backbone of hiphop.

U should be enjoyin the learnin process.. not findin "quick" ways around it and fakin sh!t.

Chill dude. not everyone has access too, or money too buy records, mixer, amp, turntables, needles and all the other sh**e that goes with it.
how is doing something that is original, and maybe something no-one has done before on the mpc faking it?? i've got a couple of foot pedals too change various things while i'm doin it and admitedly it dont sound like a dj, but if i wanted it too sound like a dj i'd use one. instead i have something i've made on my mpc that's original and sounds dope.
expand your mind people

my first set up was a
-$25 80s mixer
-dusted turntable from the attic
-dollar bin records
-cheap stereo with inputs
and i was set

a lot of kids have the attitude that they need to spend at least a grand just to spin some vinyl.
