Im classicly trained, and the reason why half of those say it is simply through ignorance that they dont know.. but its not all of them not the true artists and creative people they down with it.

And u just dont get it when it comes to this. wait till u urself develope processing skills that u become proud of and develope ur own style of "sound", then maybe u'll understand. Because u dont know how much work goes into it properly, and obviously dont and wont understand untill u do and u take the time / put the work in urself.

End of the day.. some one asked how to get drums soundin fat, then he refered to some ones style because his dont sound close, what would be the better thing to do... actually put it how it should be so he can "LEARN" and be able to do it himself.. or advice him to take another route which isnt gonna teach him anything.

And u cant say "can flip hiphop drums make them ur own", coz u dont have to do nearly as much to turn them into propa bangin hiphop drums compared to when u sample from multiple sources, layer.. and all ur processes u have to do to get them workin coheisive together,, and then shape ur over all sound.

honestly man, good drums aren't too hard to find..

if you trying to get OG copies of everything thats been used by famous producers then yeah it is, but good drum sounds aren't hard to find..

heres some really nice rock drum breaks....

Black Sabbath s/t LP , some really nice OPEN drums
Iron Butterfly "metamorphasis" LP, really softer sounding drums

DIG brother

good drums arent hard to find.....

dont fool yourself into thinking you need to use everything thats been used on www.the-breaks.com

and

dont think that your going to find a drum break always at the beginning of a song.....

As i said.. ur not just jackin a drum sound when samplin hiphop.. ur jackin THEYRE layering skills... THEYRE EQ skills... FILTERING skills.. ur basictly jackin whatever beat makers engineering skills that u are sampling from.

If u cant get good drums.. then ur wack.. u havent learnt. GO AND LEARN TO DO IT URSELF INSTEAD OF JACKIN OTHER PEOPLES SKILLS!

the same when u sample a soul or jazz or whatever record, u are jacking them (drum player + enginneer who made it sound like that) skills.

the only way out of jackin them skills is go record your own sounds.

No ur not, because number 1.... hiphop is built on that, but its about shaping those sounds to ur own (and its about havin diggin skills to find the drums and sh!t in first place that u flip)... this thred started because some one doesnt have the skills to shape **** to they own..

So instead peeps tellin him to jack that beat makers drums, instead of actually learnin to shape the sounds himself and make something new with them.

1 Thing is.. not all drums can be straight used (alot will sound weak wether u think so or not, compare them next to kev's sh!t and u got ur reason why dude started this thred, because he samples all day long and CANT GET THAT SOUND!!!!!

, yeah peeps sample and will use them without addin sh!t (processin etc), but they just sound weak, again the diff between a toy and a fully capible beat maker and the reason why the big mans sound so much better...

Now, what u guys gonna go when in the future u find the dopest drums while diggin, but u cant turn them into hiphop drums because instead of takin the time to learn how to do ur sh!t (laying, filtering, eq, compression etc) instead u just jacked other peeps hiphop drums coz u didnt take take to learn?? Basictly u just aint gonna be able to use / shape them how u want through not learnin.

Ur only holdin urselfs back with th!s bullsh!t method and un willingness to actually learn.

Is it really that much trouble / work to learn?

See when peeps give u props on ur beats, when they give props on the "sound" thats false props... coz it aint ur skills gettin that sound.. its the beat maker and the engineer who worked on the hiphop track u have sampled from!

When peeps give me props on the "sound" of my beats.. its MY WORK.. its my diggin, choppin, filtering, layering and pitching (and mixin the layers), eq'n, compression.... etc etc

Not some one elses work / time they spent on theyre hiphop drums.

And thought i better add, Anyone can learn to sequence.. but learning to get ur sh!t soundin dope soundwise... learnin to process sh!t not just to get it dope but to get ur "own sound" is alot more to learn then the actual sequencin.. its one of the biggest things which seperates skill level.

Its so obvious how its fakin it when samplin other hiphop drums, how people dont understand this is beyond me!
[/quote]

oh my...

hip hop is music and there are no rules, you seem to be a purist with a hip hop constitution, forget it.

and u should try being a little humble.

well, Dilla said he took Questloves drums from that D'angelo record. He didnt dig for that. Is dilla not hip hop? come on. Sampling is stealing! It's biting, BE HONEST. I use to think like complex, then I had to come to reality about sampling and "biting." All sampling is stealing, Stealing is biting, Sampling is hip hop, hip hop is stealing (if you sample). Just make it sound good is the rule. Thats what Dilla did! I had to say something, we should be honest here. If you dont think you should sample other producers drums, than dont do it, but that rule only applies to the person following it cause plenty of people done made classics and hits off of other peoples music. Please yall, just be honest. PLEASE.

Questlove studied under Dilla tho....in this case, we are talkin about jackin Kev Brown's snares. I don't think Kev would give any one props for takin his style...just my opinion.

Thats the wackest thing i ever heard... u dont sample other hiphop tracks and rip peeps sh!t off.

If u want to make good sh!t, u learn to make it.. he spent time and money diggin for samples.. learnin to work them right, for equipment and learning to use it correctly, learning to eq them right to achieve his sound etc etc, u dont just rip that sh!t off

To this day I wonder so many Bay Area Cats have this view on sampling?
They can't seem to see how it fits into hip hop Productions.

But if Kev samples the drums then the dude who mic'd the drumset and sat there and tracked the drums and compressed and EQ'd the drums of the drummer prolly isn't gonna give any props to Kev. Unless he don't care about this whole sampling/biting thing either. If you didn't mic the drumset yourself and compress it and eq and all that, than there's no room to talk cause your just adding to what was already done by someone else. And I dig for records and all that, but this is the truth. That unspoken rule that people are referring to isn't universal. Some of the best hip hop lyrics and beats directly took from other sources of hip hop. And Dilla and Quest learned from each other, its just that we hear the voice of admiration mainly bein' Questo cause unfortunately Jay is no longer with us. But if you heard the interviews you heard Dilla givin' Amir madd praises. And Questo had Exec. Creds on the mayne joint that Soulquarinas worked on together (or atleast their most recognized effort) Questo was the music director! Which made hime over Dilla ( though we all know that what Dilla said prolly had more influence over Amir than what Amir thought to himself, lol). So they worked together. And (I hate to add this cause I'm not much of a fan, ...but) Kanye West is a sampler of the sampled. Is Kanye not hip hop? I read him admitting to stealing drums from Eminem and Dilla. Dilla eventually gave him more drums out of his personal collection! That's just music man! People are influenced by each other and they give and take. From Genre to Genre, from artist to artist. Just make it good! If you really wanna be noble, pay homage and acknowledge your influences. Never forget those who paved the way.

I think Kev's drum sounds are kinda weak but his chops and basslines are what make him win.

if one can sample an entire bass line or chord progression and loop that to create an "original" beat, then sampling a one shot drum should never ever ever ever be called biting.

Firstly there's this whole idea of hip-hop as in it's own right and set of rules.

HIP-HOP IS JUST MUSIC.

Sampling=Stealing. Whoever you sample it from whether it be a Miles Davis record from the 1960's or a D'angelo track from the 90s.

BUT. and this is important:

IN MY OPINION, It's fine to sample if YOU MAKE IT YOUR OWN AND THE FINAL PRODUCT IS TRULY ORIGINAL AND UNIQUE... or 'FRESH'.

FOR ME THIS APPLIES TO ANY TYPE OF MUSIC SO THE IDEA OF HIP-HOP AS SEPERATE FROM THIS SIMPLY OFFENDS HIP-HOP CULTURE.

I NEVER SAMPLE FROM ANYTHING WHEN MAKING MY BEATS.
I RECORD MY OWN DRUM SOUNDS, PLAY MY OWN PIANO AND GUITAR AND BASS AND PERCUSSION.
