Same thing I've been thinking all along. Just because they are all MPC's doesn't mean every file can be swapped between them. Some people seem to have problems understanding that, accepting it, then moving on.
1st off, let's make sure you are using Akia 1000 OS or JJ 1000 OS?
2nd off. If Akai has stated (i know they've lied in past 4000 users) that the 4k Midi Files work with the 1k, then what does Akai say? Any of the 1000 users talked to Akai about this, since their manual and specs state that it does.
and then 3rd. I agree with McSmooth and not Average Whiteguy and Lapdog.
Look at the 1000 specs:
http://www.akaipro.com/prodMPC1000.php
Under "Key Features":
Standard WAV files samples and MIDI Files sequences
AND under the 4000 "Key Features":
http://www.akaipro.com/prodMPC4000.php
WAV file support, and MIDI File Type 0 and 1 support
********************
Now what type of "Standard" midi file can't you trade around? I can take a 4k sequence and put it into Cubase or Logic, why not into their OWN product, especially when they say it will work? Akai's obviously messed something up in one of the newer versions of their OS. I personally would approach them like this is a bug, since it is.
My 2cents,
Dave
