I finally figured it out. I was messing around with my swing settings and i stumbled apond that perfect swing. If you set the swing for your kick and snare at 60% and your hi hat at a regular 50% it will give your drum track a real head noding swing. Think about it, almost every track you hear
(especially a boom bap kind of beat) has that 60% swing on the kick and snare. Another thing I wanted to put yall on to is not to just have the i hat on "every" 16th or 8th note. Don't cluter the drum track with mad rides and symbles. Embellish the kick and snare or instead of having a double kick befor the snare put a double hi hat. Trust me that will give your drums a hot bounce and swing.

Try it! i garantee your drums will ride better.
See how i be lookin out for my fello mpc heads, f*ck wit your boy.

another way to achieve this is to turn the quantize off and play. The best swing is human feel which is what all swing features on drum machines are trying to emulate. For me the perfect swing setting is the one in my brain.

Not everybodys a perfect drumer. do you think cats like (lack of a better example)kayne don't quantize. the quantize feature is an mpc users best friend. lets be real if you didn't have to use quantize you might aswell just have a midi drum set like your boy just balze. i know how some people say its better to have little off beat hits but to me it just sound like your "off beat".

No one has to be a perfect drummer, he never said that.

What he is saying is he prefers to let his brain run wild with the swing.
That "bounce" is machine generated/ drummer emulated. Use quantize off and use your own feeling with your own created swing. Some people don't have that swing in their brains and need the quantize to get the track moving how they want. To each his own but I sway toward BG's statement.

exactly, and if things are out then u can individually edit to taste...

Not only that but u dont have to and most peeps dont play the whole drums together, most will put down hi hats, kicks, snares etc individually on seperate sequencer tracks.. and not many people cant play each individuals in time, otherwise that gotta mean u got real bad rhythem, if u cant play them like that then never concider becomin a dj lol

Even makin beats is a bit alien for some one like that

like son said to each is own but i perfer to quantize. it gives your tracks a profesional sound and as long as you know how to freak the swing setting on your machine your good. for people thats new to doing beats i say learn your swing, how much to put on each sound ect... even if you do it with quantize off you'll get to where your almost finish with the beat and you will notice what sounds (kick, snare, ect..) you didn't quantize cuz it won't mach up to what you did quantize. but if you think you can make a hot beat with out my little friend setting feel free.

different ears hear different things

but im tellin u the trick is......... knowing what/why/where/when/and how to quantize with respect to knowing what/why/where/when/and how not to quantize

u guys are saying this is better than that but i think its all circumstantial to the beat and to the ear and production is so ironic because....what separates an amateur track from a professional track is usually the most sublime thing that even the trained ear can barely recognize

and i think that quantize vs nonquantize gotta be one of them

i understand were BG and Lamp are comming from. But i think there is a point where you gotta say do you and who gives a ****. its the final result. And im sure most of you guys agree. There has been times where im forced to not use quantize.........then sometimes i just freestyle it. then sometimes i start with some qunatize and it turns out good.

the best advice i would say is to not be biased either way. Even if you are a great drummer and can hear the shit in your head.............you still gotta be open to quantizing if the track calls for it, or just for experimenting. it may yeild great results. and if you aint a drummer, learn quantize, but also practice!

saying "i dont quantize" vs "i wont quantize" there is a differance.

It seems to me that all you are trying to really do is attract people to your myspace page by starting this thread, otherwise I don't understand why you would put your myspace link at the bottom of all your posts.

there is no "perfect swing" setting

it varies from track to track.
