best ways to chop samples

what fam ? im rocking da mpc 2500 with the jj os i'm having a mad hard time with samples. I find a loop i like then get original bpm. chop the sample up, say the original bpm is 90 i chop the loop, spread it across the pads and i notice some chops are to short and the sample is shoter than the original bpm??? I'm not trying to rearrange the sample just trying to get this loop thing down first. what the F___ I'm doing wrong. any help hints is greatly ('') u know the rest!!! Peace

its the machine. Its not advanced enough. maby you should buy a more expensive mpc or wait for a better jj os.



or just rely on your ears. it sounds like someone told you the "proper" way to make beats- get your own steez.

How do you know what the original BPM is?

i use tap tempo to find the original bpm,plus i know the 2500 should be capable of this its the one of the latest release

You should loop the sample first to get a perfect loop and that will tell you the real BPM. then when you chop the sample the chops should be close to perfect.

Right. Tap Tempo usually = no good.

yeah, loop it without chopping first.

that way you know for sure.

just play it from the begging at the first tick of the sequence and adjust the tempo until it loops properly

then either chop or don't chop

i have heard mixed stories about those auto chop things on the mpc. i say just do it by ear. go chop by chop, man. it may seem time consuming but you should get better results and also a good learning experience at the same time!!

you'll get sharper over time. the machine is just that...a machine. it aint gon be perfect everytime. get in the habit of usin them ears!

please son expand on that.. i read a lot of posts on here that always say CHOP by ear or chp by note.. but uh for us new skook cats, what that mean?

also ver its a way you can adjust the start and end points of each chopped slice that you make off the auto chop...

but yeah i used to chop piece by piece and it took a mad minute but i been readin bout this auto chop business finally got someone to d/l the jj os on a disk for me and i'm now learnin it that way...

Simple math..

BPM = Beats Per Min...

60 Seconds in 1 Min...

Play ur drums / track... count how many beats within 6 seconds..

Multiply by 10... and u have the bpm.

if you're not very good at maths (like me), this site really helps with working out original bpms and many other things, its a big help, but I still get the loop grooving on its own with my ears before i go here, cos like the man said ' it dont mean a thing if it aint got that swing...'
