I'm not rich ,I'm just a hard worker. Been driving 18 wheelers since 1994.

However now on an OS1.71-formatted drive with the latest Ak.Sys driver, I can transfer the whole hard drive without a crash. Pity it's super-slow USB 1.1 though...

What do you thinkdid it for you feline? Was it the reformat on OS 1.71? Or do you think its more the usb chipset in your pc? Do you know what chipset it is? I need to stabilize this ak.sys crap!

It all helped - I was originally using it on a pretty rubbish chipset on an old PC running Win98SE,
and it was almost unusable - anything over a few MB would crap out.

Updating my chipset drivers, the new Ak.sys drivers, then finally moving to a new PC with WinXP, all helped,
but I would STILL get disconnection errors on BIG transfers.

When I got sent a new hard drive by Akai, and formatted it in my MPC4000 in GLOBAL mode, I noticed that the FAT volume label it was given by default was different.
I asked Akai "OK, so the code has obviously been changed to at the very least give a different drive volume name - any other changes?" - but they professed not to have a clue.
But it worked nonetheless!

Ok thanks for that info feline. I just updated the intel chipset drivers on my fairly new motherboard (asus p5b deluxe) and use the latest usb driver from akai. It still crashed after a few mb's. So next step is im gonna backup everything from the hd in the mpc and reformat with os 1.71 and see if that helps.

Ill post my results later..

Doing a full format now, but I couldnt find it in GLOBAL mode? I had to go into the SAVE / UTILITY and format it.

That's funny, I'm pretty much using the same mobo (asus p5b +) and I'm not experiencing any crashes. However my setup is used exclusively for audio/media stuff without any admin software like OFFICE XP or something to that nature. Plus the network drivers are disabled as well. To me, all that extra stuff not pertaining to recording, robs the machine of precious resources.

And of course, you've done rigorous benchmarking tests to prove this :)

I don't know! I just have not had the problems everybody else is having with the program. I load and save with no problem seamlessly via USB. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

I see you assume I use that pc for internet and surfing virus infested porn sites. But no, just like in your case, its off the net, and it only has audiosoftware installed besides the absolute necessities. So AKSYS crashing has absolutely NOTHING to do with that in this case.

Ok things are looking good!

Ive just transfered a bit over 2gb of data with samples going as deep as 3-4 folders. NOT ONE HICKUP. All transferred 100% perfect. I loaded up some songs and they played fine. I even transferred a 24 bit file that was about 160mb both to and from the mpc and no crash!

The way I tested this with all the ways I could think of, the reformat on OS 1.71 did the trick!

First I simply erased the whole hd and then chose FULL FORMAT. AND NOW IT FVCKIN WORKS (knock on wood).

A HUGE thanks to feline1 for this tip!

Next I'm gonna transfer my samples folder which is about 16-17 gb and has files of all sizes and tons of folder structures and if that shit works then yeah.. formatting in OS 1.71 is what is the answer to this. Atleast for me and feline1.

So for everyone that has problems with AKSYS crashing try it! Back all the data up (took me several days with all the crashes) and make sure you are on OS 1.71 then do a FULL FORMAT.

I'll post the result of the samples folder transfer tomorrow cause im gonna let it run over night, I wanna be able to use the mpc right now ;)

It does irritate me this, though -

I mean I got my MPC4000 is 2002, with OS 1.16 (?),
and the volume label on the internal hard drive was ... oh I forget,
but that's not important,
point is it was DIFFERENT to the one I got when I reformatted under OS 1.71.

So Akai changed the format routine.

if they changed the code, why can't they bloody well document that fact and tell us what they changed?!
Then we can see whether the change would affect Ak.sys!

I hear you on that. The format "title" didnt change for me though, it was FAT32 before and is still FAT32 but something is definitely going on "behind the scenes".

I agree, there has been NOTHING about anything in regards to the harddrive in the OS Addendum's... Good finding, I guess I know what I"ll be doing this week, re-backing up my MPC drive :)

Cheers,
Dave

*sigh* I'm feeling kind of unlucky. grr.

First, I try to set my MPC to 96K and it barfs up a bunch of noise.

I did a full format of the HD under 1.71 and I still get crashes during sample transfers.

*sigh*

(Blue Haze will be telling me to move along momentarily, haha.)
