No, that's not right!
I think your machine is frozen if it's still on that screen.
It's definitely some kind of software issue. I think purge hangs on certain sample types as well. Or if there is something messed with your sample files it may do that. I think I remembered having some messed up files that kept making my 1k freeze on purge.
I'll just sum up quick. Something is definitely wrong, and it could be a variety of reasons, and not necessarily an OS issue per se.

let me ask you a question. what other kind of sample can the akai handle then. As far as I know it can only handle one type. 16 bit 44100
