You can get a repress of the Skull Snaps LP for like $12.00. My whole theory on "original" pressing versus a repress is always go for the repress unless you see an "original" priced at the same amount as the repress. Especially in a case like this where the repress doesn't lack in sound quality, or printing of the jacket.

People paying $100.00 plus for that record are insane. IMO, once there is a repress of something, the rarity and value of the original is lost. Let me also state that there is a difference between a bootleg and a repress. A repress is an exact copy of the original from the sound quality, labels, cover art, etc. A bootleg is usually a white label of inferior sound quality, no cover art, etc.

So point blank, imo a $100.00 plus Skull Snaps OG is nothing special now that anybody can get an exact repress.

All that stuff is re-issued. Nothing special about the OGs. What I mean by "there's nothing special about the OG" is there is nothing to really distinguish og from repress. How would you feel if you bought an OG pressing from somebody on ebay for $150.00 only to find out...no it's really the repress that you coulda got for $10.00. Now I love the rare stuff probably more than anybody, and will spend $$$ as I have in the past. But I'd rather spend $100.00 on something that the average buyer wouldn't even look at because it's so rare and the breaks are not common, then to spend it on "bragging rights" for an OG of something anybody can get their hands on. So what I'm saying is the stuff I spend big $$$ on isn't even categorized as an OG because there is only one pressing of the vinyl. You either have it or you don't.

It sounds like you gotta start dealing with some real heads man - check out the sales on soul strut. Good luck finding an OG Skull Snaps for $50 though...

I'm proud of my collection too but luckily I got all the OG copies when they first came out and that's all there were. That's why I don't see why people spend mad $$$ for a David Axlerod, James Brown, or Galt MacDermot LP that I got 20 plus yrs ago either inherited, or very cheap when they can get the same thing for $10.00.

Man you got me thinking about thinning my herd and with about 5% of the money I would get from these OG copies just copping some re-presses .

yeah i mean that's the whole thing right there: if you really believe what you're saying, that represses (which are mostly bootlegs) are just as good as O.G. presses, then you should liquidate your originals and re-buy the fakes.

...the "bragging rights" aspect is still there for me, I'm not even going to lie to myself and pretend it's not more important for me to have an original... I can chalk up a little bit of it to "well, these new ones are bootlegs and the wrong people are getting paid," but the purist collector nerd part of me is still there... I like knowing I have the real sh!t... it makes me feel better knowing the record in my hand is from the O, and not some guy pressed up a thousand skull snaps to sell on eBay, no matter how good they sound...they're still fake.

I have a fake skull snaps, and I know it's fake. And I'll tell you it's fake. I wish I had a real one. Will I pay a hundred bucks? Probably not... but I'll gladly trade my fake one for a real one, if someone wants to put their "it's all about the sounds, F the history" stance where their mouth is...

lol good luck widdat though, right? That'd be the true test though, if you were willing to do that, I'd finally believe OG v repress didn't matter to you... pm me if interested, anyone! lol

I'm a really big fan of the stuff where a current label goes and digs up the original artist, like that Darondo or what stones throw does...that's cool.

Not true. A bootleg is just that, and it is ALWAYS easy to detect a bootleg because it lacks original specs such as cover art, original record label printing, sound quality, etc (ie: Dusty Fingers, Strictly Breaks, U.B.B., white label printings, etc). Bootlegs don't pose a threat in terms of your collection.

A repress is often just that. A good example is the Funkadelic represses that came out a few years ago. These were pressed by the owner of the Bridgeport catalog who had the master tapes, and the records had the exact specs as the originals. If both are the same condition, put 'em side by side and you would not be able to tell the difference. I get pissed whenever a repress comes out because now I got something (OG copy) that I can no longer say is rare or special if "New Digger Dave" can go to the local spot and cop it.

Also think of it like this...The Jordan Retros vs. the OGs. You can look at a retro shoe, and even tho it's designed like the OG, you can tell it's not an original, but it's still manufactured by Nike so it's not a bootleg. That's what makes the OGs more expensive than the retros. You can look at them and spot things such as colors that distinguish it as an OG.

most of this stuff we're talking about isn't officially repressed...most all of it is bootleg stuff... the skull snaps bootleg I have is even a gatefold, it sounds really good, all that... I just know that the original band isn't seeing a dime from it (maybe a bad example, since from what I understand they didn't see a dime back in the day), just some guy who was like "man, this record sells for a hundred dollars, i'm gonna press up a bunch on my own and sell them for fifteen bucks a pop on eBay...printing money!"
