First of all you have to have a love for music not just one particular style.. Now as a lover of music it should be quite easy to listen to songs all the way through to get an understanding of how these songs were made as far as the intro, vocals, bridge, turnaround, etc remember the mindset that these catts had when they were making these songs(that are timeless by the way remembering that "HIPHOP" as we know it is just a babay at 30 something years old...Most of these song are a lot older than that (and im not talking bout the 80s songs that really fueled the whole "POP" side of The Game as it is) Okay How many times have you expierenced as a producer using the same beat as somebody else but they just beat you to it? and then you realized that sometimes they did'nt use the dopest part?? WHY? because they just wanted the "BREAK" or "BASS LINE" that most (NOT ALL) people think is in the beginning or the middle? even if you dont have wax i would dare to say that not everybody listens for the same thing .I go beat digging with my peeps and we all come up with diffrent stuff...So it's not really that "Soul" or "FUNK" is played out it's just the lame production skills of some folks that dont want to work!! Question what was the first thing you did after you sampled into your MPC? you Chopped it up right EXACTLY LOL... Just go back and listen to those songs Im sure you will find something worthy of using in a way that no one else did Oh yea it's called "CREATIVITY" Plus not everybody knows what records to look for sometimes it's just what someone told them or they read about besides records are the "Foundation" of this whole "CULTURE" so show them respect by listening to the whole song and understanding the atmosphere in which these songs were made!!! Im not saying that you have to be a d.j. to understand and produce (an argument I had with some one at Guitar Ctr in Jerzie) but it would help you to know whole songs because they all are great in thier own way.... okay who's got that John Hembrick Joint on 45??? or that Obrey Wilson??? chop, chop chop, my friends... the days of whole loops have been over Oh and you can thank BIz for that LOL....
