smoother velocity additive switching with simult pad layers

this is a very powerful simult trick that i formerly didn't have enough control over my polyphony to take advantage of:

take 2 pads, A15 and B15
load 2 snares of very different sound
put snare 1 on A15, 2 on B15
go to AMP and set pad B15 to 1-100 (leave A15 at 50-100)
simult A15 to B15

tap A15 lightly. NOTE: only you hear A chime in, but B is very very quiet, probably inaudible even.

tap the pad harder. note: A gets louder, but B gets louder at a faster rate. this is additive layering, and it's very powerful because it gives many, many more "steps" in how different the sound is than mere velocity switching.

however, combine additive switching WITH velocity switching. snag 3 snares from 2 different breaks and arrange them on A and B15 from softest to hardest going up the velocity scale, and you have a VERY expressive snare.

i worked with this a lot over the weekend and liked the results.

but my damn pads are all broken, i can only dream of velocity right now. need to beat the shit out of a01 - a05 to get them to play. it's time for the pad fix...

Thanks for the tip Nym. I have been following your velocity switching techniques closely. I have also been implementing them, but this tip seems to give the most dynamic drum sounds yet. This is what I have been looking for in terms of dynamic drum sounds in the live setting...., and studio environment I guess. And so simple too! Much quicker and easier than velocity switching.

Nym alsways comes up with the mad scientist type tricks! BTW, Is this an OS2-only meth, or does it work on OS1, too?

the important function is Simult so this is cross platform, though you have SOOO much more power over the sounds with adsr in os2.

Okay, cool. BTW, there are so many ill techniques and tricks out there for the JJ-OS and the MPC in general. Why isn't there a wiki out there yet? Could call it MPC1k Tactics or Techniques or somethin like that... we could link that to the guy who got that http://www.mpc1000info.com site. Wouldn't that be somethin'?

im totally in love with the new adsr's features, drum synthesis is now a reality.

need to do a group buy on them pad replacements, there a bit exxy!

i would really like to head it up, but you know what, i'm gonna be straight booked soon.
i'm teaching songwriting at a summer camp at the university of virginia, basically i will be a human drum machine/midi technician, supplying students with instrumental backing of their choice ("cabasa? you got it, homie") and immediately after that, i'm packing all my gear into a van and driving across the united states to my new home in California.

during this time i will be all but incommunicado

edit: but you know, i am WELL aware for a solid fact that folks out there have techniques that i haven't begun to tap into. especially with pad pattern, notably, and if i can drop a name, mkll has a wicked technique with effects changes that he showed me. it's one thing if folks don't want to share their tricks - i respect that. however, i think that if i have to play catchup, ya'll could put something pretty wonderful together in the meantime. even if/especially if it's just a loose gathering of txt files...

I tried to install mediawiki on my webspace at my friend's server, but it didn't work because my section of the server doesn't have .php installed... but I will talk to him if he can do that, once I find the time.
