no, the appropriate word would have been contradiction...

don't know what the attitude is all about anyway, if people hadn't come up in here with that holier than thou "there isn't anything worth sampling off youtube" attitude then this wouldn't even be an issue

just so long as you're aware that the audio has been heavily compressed, digitised dirtily, is available to anyone else with a computer and has been dug by someone else already.
thats enough to put me off that isht.

This.

I never said not to sample off youtube - though I think it should be avoided unless absolutely necessary due to the quality (don't need to get into that though)

the point I was making is that if something is on youtube it's not rare, and to think so is silly -- hell anything with 'rare' in the title on the internet is usually NOT rare

go ahead and sample it anyways though, I never said not to

In the end it doesn't really matter where you get sounds from does it ?
If you limit yourself by not walking certain paths just because they're unconventional your mind is not open for innovation. I'm not saying you should sample youtube, which I think is a great idea if you find what you need because there's a lot of material on there which isn't copy written anyway, but I'm also not saying you shouldn't.
That's what music is all about.... being free to express yourself ... If you can't open your mind to new techniques and ways to be innovative you will sit in your comfort zone for, the rest of your life.....
Nothing wrong with having a method and sticking to it, but think about it, all the great artists you love to listen to DID break a lot of rules in their time, that's why their music sounded the way it did.
The way I see it is , sample whatever you can sample wherever you can sample it from through whatever you have to sample with...

Although vinyl does sound great and makes you feel good....

Moral of thread: It doesn't really matter where you sample from.

you're kind of implying that sampling from youtube is in some way forward thinking or groundbreaking, and that people who arnt prepared to are missing out...

and that would be crazy talk.

or am i completely misunderstanding your post?

... No, all I'm saying is sampling off youtube is just another way to get samples into your machine, and I don't see nothing wrong with that. I don't think it's a way forward, but it definetly opens up a whole lot of possibillities to some people, and I don't think you should limit yourself in the way you find your samples. I wouldn't recommend sampling off you tube for numerous reasons, but I also wouldn't say it's a bad thing...
The way forward to me is opening your mind to different ways to make music, and if helps you to achieve that by sampling off you tube or any other unconventional method, then good luck to you.

The reality of it is that this is a purists game (and I think it should stay that way), and sampling from anything else than vinyl is being seen as "breaking the rules". This makes it difficult for some people to achieve the results they want because these "rules" don't work well for everybody.

It doesn't work for me, although there is material on there which you can't find in record stores , so maybe I'm too much of a purist, but for some people it apparently works, otherwise there wouldn't be a thread about this. And good luck to them.

Let's all agree to disagree......

Get what you want where ever you can find it.

I tried sampling youtube today... It was not bad for sampling from a speech... I would *avoid* using it for a song, because those are pretty ez to find in better quality.

But I don't see anything wrong with it.
