Reviews and questions about the entry-level MPC500
By Arpnutt Wed Sep 10, 2008 1:24 pm
I only have ever owned the 500 so I have no other MPCs to compare too. I did however sample the same sounds to both the 500 and my Korg M3. The M3 sample sounded exactly identical to the original. The 500 sounded thicker or maybe a little dirtier to my ears. I liked the sound of the 500 better than the M3 for drums. They are more "in your face." The way I look at it is I have the best of both worlds.

I'm mixing on ns-10's. So my mix is pure, i was just thinking about this topic, nada mean.
Thanks all for the comments. chuuch!

NS-10's suck they cant produce anything below 50hz (even if they say they can the speaker cone is not good enough to make that transient) if you want a super sick kick sound you will set a HPF at 50hz (where the mud is) then spike 30hz (where the meat is) and you cant hear this move on NS-10's (FYI)

the only reason you find NS-10's in studios is because some big producer in the 80's wanted to mix on speakers (bookshelf style) that most consumers listen to, well now days everyone listens to music either in the car or on a computer speaker system that usually comes with a sub to make up for lost Low Fq in the larger speakers (usually 4''-6''), and the sub is most likely ported and have a 70Hz boost so you should keep that in mind when mixing. All in All NS-10's look good (white/black) they just dont do the job they are used to do.

FYI, I bought the NS-10's so I could hear my mix as it would sound in the car along with 4 12" speakers in a kicker box, since most consumers listen to music in there car. And also, NS-10's are a favored and used by Brian Big Bass Gardener, Doc Dre and Dj Quik, so there mixes must suck then, huh!

well i have had the 2k, 2kxl, 1k, and now the 500.....to be honest i really dont notice a big difference. However, i was very impressed with how well the 500 sounded. I was expecting a lot worse, more like a cheap sound...wasnt sure....but if i played you a beat made on the 2k vs. the 500 you wouldnt be able to tell the difference..i guarantee it!

I have Yamaha A5000 and RS7000 samplers besides my MPC500, they sound rather bad (muddy) compared to the MPC500.

For the money, the MPC500 sounds both clean and punchy in my opinion.

What about the lower volume output than the rest of the MPC range? This is reported by Akai. I feel like that must impact the sound...

Perhaps, but I think the volume could probably be fixed in a new update!

Postal--

I wish it were as easy as an update... I have a feeling it's hardware related, and probably due to the fact that this thing was made to run on batteries! I still can't believe how much power they packed in.

Honestly it does seem to distort more easily than some of my other workstation hardware. I'm not actually complaining though, at the end of the day this thing is really just a killer sequencer and the sound definitely get's the job done! No question.

There's only stereo out.

a 4k should sound different as it has a lot more option to display details than any other sampler considering it's Z-engine ( theoreticaly lower noisefloor, more headroom/snr )

NS10's also have a great transient response which most monitors cant match, even upto very expensive models. They may not sound great from a frequency domain perspective, and are certainly not recommended as a main set of monitors, but don't write them off as a production tool in complement to another set and a well acoustically treated room! (Don't even think about mixing bass well otherwise!)

agreed, and anyways... I prefer to refer to more then one set of monitors if I have the option.
