I'm thinking of sampling from my old Yes, Rush, King Crimson etc albums, but I'm a bit confused about the legal situation. Could I get sued if I use a distinctive snare hit like Bill Bruford's? Or a single guitar note from Mr. Fripp? There was the court case in the UK years ago, where the Art Of Noise successfully sued The Prodigy for using the word "Hey!" ...

People have to remember that these CDs they're comparing themselves too...those are being worked through the best outboard gear money can buy, mixed and mastered on million dollar recording consoles by the industry's top engineers, and mastered on the best equipment.

The bedroom is where the pre-production is done. I agree, there are tons of producers (big name guys) who are running on an 002 at home (or wherever), a la Alchemist. He's got an ASR10, a turntable running into the 002. However, his beats don't go from bedroom to shelves. They get sent to larger post produtcion studios where the audio is ran through top notch gear, and the final mixdown is done. Then they get sent to a mastering engineer who works his magic. It's a long process.
As a UK hip hopper I must disagree... Some of the rawest banging beats have come from bedroom studio's and im talkin about artists who are established (yeah thats how our scene is here in the UK).. for example.. dunno if theres anyone on here familiar but Taskforces Music From the Corner is a good example...
Its not just about the equipment.. its definitely about how you use it it.. obviously to an extent ya need some quality control but I find the MPC 1k plenty enough to get those banging drums....

Where and when did I say you can't make a beat without expensive gear? You were obviously talking to me since you quoted me. I specifically said you CAN make beats on equipment such as an MPC.
You need to stop crying about your gear, if you got an MPC, a computer, some old records and decent monitoring and you learn a little bit about the process then you can make a beat bang. Lots of records are mastered digitally all within protools, some never leave a computer.
Do you think KWest has his beats mastered through all this expensive gear to make them bang?? Or do you think he gets his beats mastered through expensive gear because they bang??
I agree with TerroristProphecy
sensewondah wrote:you can definately make a beat bang on the mpc. dont get it twisted. you can make it bang harder by using a good engineer and a good mastering job.Exactly!
get it sounding as good as you can on the mpc.
then take it to the studio.
