Hello,

I just got a MPC 1000, though I'm not new to the world of MPCs, having owned a 2000xl for 3 years and really getting to know it. Just poking around on the 1000, things make SO much sense thanks to my familiarity with the 2000xl and also the new JJOS. I have OS2, version 1.20 on there now, fyi.

My problem is that when I plug in headphones to the headphone jack, sound only comes out the right channel. As I insert the jack, sound comes out the left channel for a second, then when fully inserted, comes out the right only. Never does sound come out both channels at the same time.

Also, when I try to send the output of a pad via stereo outs, only the right side comes through. I get all of the right side, but when I pan left, nothing. This happens on mono as well as stereo samples, but from what I remember from the 2000xl days, both mono and stereo samples come out on both channels of a pad--mono just plays dual.

If I've totally overlooked some setting that will fix all my problems, I'd be very glad to know it, before I take it to the shop. In fact, it has already seen a shop last night--my friend's--we took it apart, assuming something had broken during shipping (it was shipped from Florida, I bought the MPC off ebay, it was packed OK but not amazingly). Nothing on the circuit boards near the headphone jack and the stereo outs looked bad. One wire was slightly kinked but when tested it passed signal. No caps were melted. :x :x

He said he was sorry but didn't know what could be the problem. So now, I either take it to a place and pay them to troubleshoot, or....well, that's about my only option. So I figured I'd ask the obvious question after all that legwork...am I just missing a screen where you set this up? I'm pretty damn sure there isn't such a thing, but I've got to ask. I would be super stoked if so, even after taking it apart and putting it back together last night!

By the way, the guy I bought it from on Ebay says he babies his equipment and the 1000 worked perfectly when he sold it. I believe him, as he did all the upgrades himself: new pads, 75 gig hard drive installed, max memory, 128mb flash card. He's also offered to help me out to pay for the fix, if need be. If he was dicking me around I'm sure he would have stopped email correspondence long ago and just told me to take it up with UPS or Ebay.

Any help greatly appreciated,

JBG

Sounds odd .............Only thing I can think of is to go to the mix screen (mode pad 8 ),then press input ( F5 ) all the way to the right is mode . That should be ST, If thats not it sounds busted.

Thanks for the attempt; it's set to ST and at all settings on that screen I can only get audio out of the right channel of the headphones jack.

What's crazy is we took it apart last night and nothing is out of place. Or at least nothing appears out of place (loose/broken).

Sucks.

ok so just to be sure. have you tried to sample something for yourself? or are you loading samples into it? i only ask be cause years ago when i first got my xl i had the same problem. but it turned out that the samples i was loading were left side mono. i thought my junk was fried. but i sampled some vinyl and it was all good. it really had me stuck for a minute too. also with the jjos you can play soft through with the inputs. so just hook something up to it and see if sound is even traveling through on both channels.

Yes, I have tried multiple pairs of headphones. Same issue.

As for the sampling new stuff vs. loading mono samples idea, I have only loaded samples in and played them. And most are mono samples. But I have definitely loaded some stereo samples as well. However, wouldn't it not matter as the MPC would by default play a mono sample back on both channels anyway, at least out of the headphone jack?

Also, I thought the mixer screen gives a pan setting for each pad, indicating that you can pan any sample from 100% left to 100% right, mono or stereo.

Keep in mind it's not just the headphone jack that is fu**ing up, it's the stereo outs on the back as well. Regardless of what kind of samples you have in the machine, they should be routed through the stereo outs (if so selected at the mixer screen) to produce a stereo array. I'm not saying they are stereo samples, just that you can pan them left or right and that this should translate to the L and R of the stereo outs--or am I on drugs??????

Great to know that the headphone jack is $125 to replace. If both the stereo outs need to be replaced it might make this the most expensive MPC 1000 yet.....as it cost me $900 upfront (new pads, 75 gig hd, maxxed memory, 128MB flash card....was worth it if everything worked properly....). At least the seller has agreed to split the repair and shipping costs.

I am very glad that I seem to be beyond getting frustrated about this. A few years ago and I would have been rotting from the inside with frustration. Somehow, I didn't exactly expect the MPC to give me problems, but let's just say I wasn't shocked, after my rocky experiences with zip drives/disks, corrupted data, etc. on the 2000xl. New machine, new issues, that's all.

But don't get me wrong, if there's an easy fix, I'm all BOUT IT BOUT IT.

Follow up:

Plugged in my laptop to sample something directly. MPC shows both channels are working (I see levels on the screen) but the headphones only play out the right side (if you pull the jack out of the port the left side only plays when it's halfway, but plugged all the way in only the right side plays--i.e. exactly the same as before).

Thanks for your suggestions but it appears there's a definite problem with the headphone jack, and quite possibly the L stereo out jack. Off to VST it goes on Monday.

Thanks guys,

most likely a stress-fracture in the solder joint or a defective component. try gettin out the iron and just re-solder the connections for that jack...might work and save you the $125..

his left stereo out isnt working either. replacing the headphone pcb wont fix it. unless in some quwirk the left main has a solder prob too. but the odds are against it. try routing out the 1-2 or 3-4 to see if that works. if it dont then your left channel is fried

I'm definitely into doing it myself, but as mentioned above, the problems are multiple. Left channel on stereo outs is inoperable, as well as on the headphones. We had it apart the other night and did a little soldering touch up, no luck. There was a white/orange striped wire that went from the board shown above (headphones/footswitch inputs) to the other end where the stereo outs are, and it looked a little crimped, but when straightened it passed signal, as did the grey wire alongside it.

At this point I'm not convinced that buying just the new jacks and replacing them will fix the problem.

The individual outs (1, 2, 3, 4) all work properly. Since they are mono anyway, they shouldn't have a problem. Though I should check the "1/2" and "3/4" settings as well. After checking all the various stuff sometimes I don't remember exactly what happens on a given setting....

I also wonder: how could this have happened IN SHIPPING??? Does jostling/rough treatment cause the death of the left channel somehow? Bizarre.

Forget about the fact that the left channel works on your headphones when plugged halfway in. All you are doing is playing the right channel through the left speaker.

It really sounds like your left channel is boned someplace else and not the headphone jack. I'd guess it is here...

That's a $255 fix, but it sounds like the A/D D/A converter board has a problem. If you really did have a busted headphone port then you would still have stereo out working properly on your L/R channels. I don't know for a fact, but I would be willing to bet that this board feeds the audio signal to the headphone/footswitch/compact flash board. Maybe somebody else with more experience in this area knows though.

The only other thing I'd suggest as a cheap possible fix would be to reload either the base akai os or jjos v1/v2. I only say this because it is possible though unlikely that you somehow have a corrupted firmware issue that messed up the OS.

Good luck!
