Pft.

This is no doubt the case. Question is: did it improve the timing enough to measure up to the XL? I'm interested in hearing from anyone who can test this. The search function has produced zero results on this particular comparison.

Opinions are well and good, but I prefer science.

I see what you are saying T7. You want a comparison of the 2000XL's timing and the 2500's timing.

My post didn't really state any opinions. If you are more interested in science than opinion, does it really make much sense to post up this question on a message board (where virtually everything is an opinion)?

Especially since you mentioned that you have searched and searched for this topic and have found zero results, it seems to me that there probably aren't very many people who own both the 1000/2500 and the 2000XL or have had both machines in their hands at a particular point and managed to do a timing test/comparison between the two.

If you are really passionate about looking into this, then I suppose at this point it would make sense to do the test yourself. Maybe rent the machines or borrow the machines from people you know who have them, run the experiment yourself, and record you observations. You know, like how scientists do.

You must be daft. Seems to me the biggest MPC forum on the web would be the first place to post my request.

Here's a shocker for you: There are quite a few on this board who own more than one MPC!

Now go do something useful.

Too cool. Cheers!

I can only test the timing on the 2500 with JJ OS 1 though. I have never had the 2kxl. I came from the 2000.

Beggars can't be choosers. Sounds good to me.

Well now you've just gone and hurt my feelings.

More than one MPC?! Blasphemy! LIES THEY'RE ALL LIES !!!

LIES I TELL YOU!!

And I will do as many useless things as I please. Good day to you ma'am

Sincerely,
Daft

:D

Everyone has a sense of humor in the MPC forums.

In any case, I would obviously be very interested in seeing a timing test comparison between as many midi sequencers (MPC or not) as possible and have it all compiled into one thread. It could be like a group science project.

Making it a controlled experiment, as Nym suggested, would be very difficult tho.

You phail. See this thread, ya lazy git: viewtopic.php?f=27&t=89534&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=sample+accurate

I'm gonna quote myself: "How does a JJ OS 2500 compare to the XL?".

Did you actually compare the JJ MPC2500 with the MPC2000? No? Then STFU.

Now that I have some more time to answer, let me say I'm sorry I let you down. I never really intended to do an extensive test, and I never said so either. I guess I didn't make that clear. Probably shouldn't have opened my mouth in the first place, but I'm sure we'll all survive. ;)

The very simple test I did showed exactly the same results, meaning that there is only a 70 sample delay on tracks and on layered samples, just as on Akai OS. 70 samples @ 96 khz amounts to 0.729 ms, which isn't bad at all. It is strange that it is either spot on or exactly 0.729 ms off, but this is with using only two samples in the mpc. Further tests will obviously reveal other things.

I never did any tests on the 2k, but would from personal experience say that it is worse. I did try to layer two identical but inverted samples to get a high pass filter effect on the 2k and the timing fluctuated wildly, but never more than a few ms, depending on what else was playing.

A while back I did a timing test with my 2kxl, 2500 with akai OS and all 3 JJ (free,1,2)

Here is what I did, recorded a 4 bar pattern at 120bpm with just a rimshot on each quarter note, I recorded 32 bars at 44.1khz then examined the wav file. The 2500 was almost identical regardless of OS and performed very well with typical maximum deviation of only a few samples, the 2000xl was tight but the maximum deviation was around 16 samples. So in actual fact the 2500 is tighter.

Having said this if you are going from a 2kxl make sure that you try a 2500 first, I find that the 2500 is missing a few operational niceties from the 2kxl and the general feel is quite different (not feel as in swing or timing but in actual use) Truth be told they are both great machines though.

Well, reading through this thread gives me more confidence in the JJOS....I think I'll be upgrading here soon.So far version 3.08 beats out the Akai OS IMO. :D
